Starting immediately and runâ€" ning through June 17th, Halton Regional Police officers will be taking part in the provinceâ€"wide crackdown designed to cut down on collisions, injuries and death. In order to do so they‘ll be handâ€" ing out a lot more than friendly advice. "This is an enforcement project not a PR thing," said Sgt. Tom Chapman, explaining that charges will be laid and demerit points deducted. "We will not be cauâ€" tioning people." Police define "aggressive" driving as speeding, following too close, failure to yield rightâ€"ofâ€" way, improper lane changes, improper passing and disobeying traffic signs and signals. "We will mainly be focusing 3 on speeding," said Sgt. Chapman. "Of all the complaints we get from people, that‘s what concerns them most." To address this anxiety, Halton Police will be adding special units from their four divisions to reguâ€" lar patrol enforcement. The idea is to impress upon drivers the consequences of their behavior in terms of everything from vehicle damage and traffic slowdowns to personal injury and fatalities. According to police, these individuals account for 4% of annual road collisions. Other statistics, compiled from 1992, are even more alarming. That year in Ontario 417,420 vehicles were involved in nearly 224,300 reported collisions â€" 85% of which were caused by driver error. A total of 1,090 people were killed and 91,025 injured. Of those killed, 548 were drivers, 317 were passengers, 47 were motorcycle driver and six were motorcycle passengers. The remainder were pedestrians, cyclists, snowmobilers and others. While more than half the convictions found on driving records were for speeding, this tends to be a factor among younger drivers. Old drivers are more prone to failure to yield the rightâ€"ofâ€"way. Over half of the fatal accidents occurred on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. w oo zs NV ALLET with C SALOP | ‘g ounpr ‘Aepuns ‘puayaay 10Ae0g â€" 1 L
