Perseverance and drive are essential if such a goal is to be realized, he added. "You have to make those choices every single day of your lives. When you wake up do you decide to be smarter today and learn something or do someâ€" thing else worthwhile. That‘s how great things are done in this world." As well, he said his ability to pursue wider interests and get as much experiâ€" ence as possible enabled him to finally reach his goal of being an astronaut. He told the students that not only are there medical doctors among his crew of astronauts working for NASA, but also concert pianists, people who have sailed across the world, speak six or seven languages and climb mountains. In an earlier interview, Hadfield said he was one of four astronauts selected from more than 5,300 applications to be astronauts. After a grueling selection process which included in week long medical examination, he was one of two to work with NASA. He lives with his wife and three children in a NASA community in Florida. For the past two years he has been training for his space mission. In among the extraordinary people who become astronauts, does he consider himself to be extraordinary? "Just extraordinarily lucky," he says with a smile. And now, as he‘s belting in with the crews for one of the 60 or so missions into space every year, he can‘t help but feel the same excitement he felt 25 years ago. "Who wouldn‘t love it?" he laughs.
