When not busy at the Xerox Centre, Hair enjoys spending his free time as a member of the Ontario Racket Club. His wife, Judy, is well known in Oakville. A former director of Physiotherapy at the Mississauga Hospital, she has contracted her services to the Halton Region Home Care Service for the past eleven years. Their three children â€" Geoff, Mandy, and Sue â€" all of whom graduated from Oakville Trafalgar High School, are now established in their own businesses in Vancouver, Ottawa, and Fredericton, respectively. Hair will be honored for his exceptional achievements at the special cerâ€" emony at Oakville Town Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. The recepâ€" tion will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and light refreshments will be served. Sidewalk sale June 16thâ€"18th Oakville‘s longest running sale event, Downtown Oakville‘s "Sidewalk Sale" â€" will be held from June 16th to 18th. Over one hundred merchants will bring their goods out onto the street and offer some of the best prices of the year. This year, an information booth will be setâ€"up in the square to help customers get the most out of this threeâ€"day outdoor extravaganza. Also, watch for DOBI, Jake from the Lake, and the Waterfront Festival‘s Windstar van to make appearances. According to Hair, the area of Colloid Chemistry is an old discipline currently enjoying a renaissance. Hair‘s studies focus on providing the abilâ€" ity to bridge the gap between the vision of a final product, and the science that ultimately makes it possible. Hair has been at the leading edge of his field for over 30 years. Prior to his current position with Xerox, Hair focused his talents on the chemistry of glass for Coming Glass Works. At Xerox, Michael is currently working on a process that could eventually do away with the powdered photocopier toner that we now use. The ultimate goal would be to produce a liquid toner, similar to that which is used in bubble jet type computer printers. This would mean no more black photocopier toner sticking to everything in sight, when it comes time to change the toner. Growing up in England, Hair was an enthusiastic soccer player â€" played for the University Cricket Team and was captain of the King‘s College Cricket Club. Years later (in 1974), Michael and his family came to Oakville when Xerox started its Canadian Research Centre. While the concept of Colloid Chemistry (the science that deals with surâ€" faces and small particles), may be difficult for most of us to grasp, its sigâ€" nificance in our every day lives is not. "The obvious examples of colloid chemistry are a frying pan or glass cookingâ€"ware whose surfaces are treated so that they do not stick," said Hair. "Glass surfaces can be chemically etched and treated creating new surfaces which give rise to a process known as chromatography," he added. Dr. Michael Hair, an Oakville resident and world renowned scientist, will be honored tomorrow (June 6th) at a special Mayor‘s reception at Town Hall. While Hair is well known to his scientific colleagues, his research is not as well known to the general public, who ultimately benefit from his years of study. Working in the field of colloid and surface science is not a glamâ€" orous pastime. Simply put, Hair works with surfaces. "Surfaces cover everything," said Michael, from his laboratory at the Xerox Research Centre of Canada in Mississauga, "everything we look at and everything we touch has a surface. Altering those surfaces to suit our many purposes is a major goal." Hair was recently presented with The Ralph K. Her Award in Colloid and Surface Science at a gala ceremony in San Diego. He is the first Canadian ever to receive the prestigious award. Scientist to be honored Monday at special Town Hall reception * For more information, call 844â€"4520.
