PHONE A N ©8/To end your call press * *‘ â€" on i tdÂ¥ 4 ruise SUNDAY, JUNE 5, 1994 We receive many inquiries about cruising as a vacation. Let‘s review some of the common misconceptions about cruises. Why are cruises so expensive? Cruises are offered in every price range to suit most budgets. When you consider what is included in the price of a cruise, it may be one of your best vacation values. Air tickets, transfers between airâ€" port and dock, accommodations, port charges and taxes, all meals (and what fabulous food), great entertainment, and a wide variety of shipboard activâ€" ities are included. Not included are optional shore excursions, shopping (which may not be optional for some!), casino action (you may win and be ahead!), bar drinks, and tips. The payment made to your travel agent before you leave home probably represents 85% or more, of your vacation cost. Will I have motion discomfort on the ship? Unless you suffer similarly in cars, buses, trains or planes, it is unlikely that you will experience motion discomfort on a cruise ship. Cruise passengers of the ‘50s and ©‘60s â€" who suffered the passage of a North Atlantic crossing â€" would not recognize cruising or cruise ships of the ‘90s. All modern cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers resulting in significantly reduced motion during the Shop Locally Information :. There are medical aids, and the nonâ€"medical wrist bands ("Seaâ€" bands" are sold in local pharmacies â€" about $15) have become a very popuâ€" lar aid to assist you in eliminating the effects of motion sickness. My husband won‘t take a cruise, he says "there‘s nothing to do!" Today‘s cruise lines can meet the needs of any traveler. For a relaxing, passive holiday, or a busy agenda and everything inâ€"between... there is a cruise for you. An interview with an experienced travel counselor to establish the vacaâ€" tion needs of that husband (and the wife‘s too) should result in the recomâ€" mendation of the cruise ship and itinerary for that couple. With over 100 ships and many more itineraries to choose from, everyone can be accommodated. Some answers about cruising scenery can be part of a cruise. Cruise in the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, to South America, to Alaska, in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. Or how about a more exotic cruise to the Orient or the South Pacific islands? There is a cruise for everyone! Do I have to wear a tuxedo for those stuffy evenings? No, you don‘t have to wear a tux, and those evenings are anything but stuffy! On the other side, there are many passenâ€" gers who do enjoy dressing up, and the cruise is the place to do it! Usually, two nights in a sevenâ€" night cruise are identified as "formal dress." They are the Captain‘s Welcome Party on the second night and the Gala Windâ€"up Party on the sixth night. A dark suit or blazer with tie is acceptable on all ships. The other five nights will be "informal" (jacket with or without tie) or "casual" (open shirt and slacks). Happily, the ladies always know how to dress and a wide range of dress is acceptable. On all ships, swim suits and shorts are not acceptable in the main dining room. Hopefully, I have addressed some of the concerns about cruising. If you have some other questions, please drop me a line and I shall try to respond in future columns.
