But even the most casual student of air war history knows full well the measure of Ridley‘s sacrifice. He was a tail gunner who survived 36 night bombing raids on the Third Reich, who flew in a thinâ€"skinned, drafty and slow fourâ€"motored bomber against the most sophisticated and deadliest nightfighters in existence and who won a Distinguished Flying Cross for his efforts. With no disrespect intended to anyâ€" one else, Dâ€"Day was every mission for Ridley and the thousands of RCAF boys who flew against the Nazi war machine for the four years leading up to the invasion and year after. And with the hindsight of history, the facts show that the Allies needed two things to happen to make Dâ€"Day a success: the Germans‘ ability to react to the invasion and the Allies‘ ability to distract and delay that effort. To hear Ridley tell it, he never had anything to do with the invasion because he was airforce; in other words, he wasn‘t really in the thick of the ruckus when the invasion went down. "I didn‘t know it was Dâ€"Day until we got back. We were told during our debriefing. The only thing I can remember thinking was that there was never any doubt that we‘d ;come out on top of this thing," said Ridley. In fact, two cataclysmic events happened to Ridley that day a half century agoâ€"discovering the Allies had invaded France and and learning he had flown his last combat mission.
