Fresh off a silver medal perforâ€" mance in the 1500â€"metre race on Friday, Mary Unsworth, a Grade 10 student at Appleby College, pulled off a crowdâ€"rousing upset Saturday, winning gold in the junior girls 800â€" metre race. Her performance gave Appleby College its first ever gold at an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) championship. To do it, the 16â€"yearâ€"old Burlington resident had to beat some pretty stiff competition, including: second place finisher Carmen Douma of Woodland Christian School in Breslau who won the event last year; and third place finisher Mary Jane Richard who represented Canada at the world junior cross country champiâ€" onships earlier this year in Budapest, Hungary. Unsworth, who was competing in her first ever OFSAA track and field championships, learned a key lesson from Friday‘s 1500â€"metre race which, despite a silver medal, wasn‘t totally satisfying. Explained Unsworth: "I got boxed up. I didn‘t have a great start. I had a hard time getting around people." Still, she did clock in at a perâ€" sonal best time of 4:35.67. Mary Jane Richard took the gold medal while Carmen Douma won the bronze medal. On Saturday, in the 800â€"metre race, her start was so good it almost cost her in the end. She had planned to stay with Mary Jane Richard, but as it turned out things worked out much better. "At the first bend I was ahead, and I just decided to keep on going." But while her rocketâ€"like start propelled her out of the traffic, she nearly paid for it at the end when her legs "seized up in the last 100â€" metres." Appleby‘s school chaplain and track and field coach, Father Bob Lennox, said that "when she crossed the finish line (in a personal best time of 2:11.82), her legs were wobbling and I thought she was going to black out." "I thought her gold medal ... was a remarkable upset because the girl she beat out (Mary Jane Richard) is a nationalâ€"calibre runner. But that‘s Mary, she‘s very determined to win, no matter what the sport." The accompanying increase in both pressure and nervousness was actually beneficial, she said. "I have a lot of confidence now, it (the gold and silver medals) really sets me up nicely for the cross country championships in the fall," said Unsworth who, after winning a bronze medal at the OFSAA cross country championships two years ago, failed to crack the top 20 finâ€" ishers at last fall‘s event. An accomplished field hockey â€" player and swimmer, Unsworth only recently turned her attentions to competing in the 800â€"metre and 1500â€"metre events, and she still recâ€" ognizes the need to improve. "I have good speed in the longer races, that‘s a strong point. But I have to work on my endurance." A member of the Burlington Legion Track and Field Club, she is hoping to get selected to this year‘s national junior championships in Ottawa. And obviously the athlete would love to defend her junior OFSAA crown next year in her final year of eligibility before she moves up to senior. HIGHLIGHTS Appleby‘s other athlete at OFSAA, Gareth Robinson, placed 10th in the midget boys 1500â€"metre race in 4:30.85 and 13th in the midget boys 3,000â€"metre race in 9:42.56. Queen Elizabeth Park‘s Nevin Campbell was eighth in the senior boys high jump with a leap of 1.9 metres. Other Oakville athletes that made it to OFSAA included Milton Tanswell (junior boys high jump), Laura Gates (midget girls 400â€" metre) and Claudia Rank (junior girls 400â€"metre and 800â€"metre) from Oakville Trafalgar High School; Janie Bereza (midget girls 80â€"metre hurdles) and Iwonka Kossek (midget girls javelin and shot put) from St. Thomas Aquinas; Sue Jeffers (senior girls shot put) from White Oaks; Marcia Mcintyre (junior girls triple jump) from T.A.
