PINE %TREE 336â€"0862 or mobile: 41 o _T ith spring in full swing, it‘s time to give your yard a little "TLC" â€" tender lawn care and thin layer composting. Remember, that tender lawn care begins with taking care of some basics. If you haven‘t had a soil test recentâ€" ly, take a few minutes to prepare a samâ€" ple. Using a small, clean tool, dig down about six or eight inches and remove about a teaspoon of soil. Do this at three or four spots in your yard and mix the soil in a plastic container or zipâ€"lock style bag. Be sure to sift out any organic matter (grass, stems, roots, etc.) that could affect your sample. Time for lawn TL Your local nursery, or university turf office, can analyze the sample. Results may help you pinpoint any potential problems and will provide guidelines for best grass growth, including nutrient (fertilizer) recommendations. It may also be time to aerate your lawn. Aerating the soil â€" or exposing it to circulating air â€" relieves ground comâ€" paction. Compaction is caused by peoâ€" ple walking and playing on the yard and mashing down the soil. This blocks the flow of air, water, and nutrients to the grass roots. Two types of aeration equipment are recommended. A core aerator, which removes multiple plugs of soil, is preâ€" ferred. You can also use a dethatcher, which has vertical blades that slice through the soil. In either case, aerate when your soil is dry and fertilize afterâ€" wards so food can get into the root sysâ€" tem thoroughly. Then, water your lawn. When you fertilize your lawn, keep a few basic tips in mind. First, fertilize about a month after your lawn starts to grow in the spring. This will replenish soil nutrients used by the root system for underground growth during dormancy. MAJESTICEAGLE _ bockenneus _ 8 a.m. to 2 p.m MasterCard . Here are some other hints for speci care: Attack broadleaf weeds like da delions and plantain with a contact he bicide. The herbicide will circula through the entire plant and kill it. Th herbicide must be applied when wee are growing. Eliminate narrowâ€"le plants like crabgrass with a preâ€"ems gent herbicide that kills seedlings they sprout. Preâ€"emergent herbicid should be applied in early spring befc grassy weeds sprout. And as with a garden chemical, handle with care! Use a fertilizer with a 3 t« to 2 radio: three parts nitrogen, one p: phosphorus, and two parts potassiu Nitrogen promotes grass blade gro and helps keep your grass a healt green color. Phosphorus encourages r development. Potassium helps fight d ease. Follow application instructions the fertilizer bag carefully.
