So many lives snuffed out in their prime, such an unnecessary waste. I could only stare at the jagged edges of the The driver of the other vehicle stood apart from the crowd, sullenly watching. Two bruises were the only physical scars. An ambulance entourage rushed past me towards the scene of destruction. Two adults were dragged from the dilapidated vehicle, their faces unidentifiable. What folâ€" lowed next will forever be etched on my brain. From the back seat â€" a small baby girl â€" still in her car seat, was carefully removed. A blanket was still clutched in her arms. Her mouth was open, forever frozen in a silent scream. This child, barely born, was now dead. One car lay overturned on its side. The ditch it lays in was filled with a shock of red, the body of the car almost indistinguishable. The second vehicle stood upright, a few dents and scratches slightly marring its surface. Beer bottle fragments lay embedded in the mud, the last remains of alcohol dripping from them. I stand here, the rain pelting down, blurring my vision. Men and women in blue stand around me. People are talking, lights are flashing, and shouts are screamed, and yet, I hear nothing. My eyes can only focus on the scene in front of me. St. Ignatius of Loyola School By CYNTHIA HILL After spending the time at the seminar, I realized that it is a good idea to target the young people in my age group about the dangers involved in drinking and driving because it sets their minds against it long before they get their drivers licenses. During November of 1993, I was chosen to participate in a seminar concerning drinking and driving which was based on how to raise awareness of the dangers involved. Two representatives from each high school and elementary school were invited to attend, as well as, anyone who felt they could make a contriâ€" bution to the issue. During the meeting, we discussed how other schools had raised awareness of drunk driving and gave information on how we could inform the stuâ€" dents of St. Johns. We, then, viewed a very powerful video on the danâ€" gers of drunken driving. There is no excuse for drinking and driving. It is disrespectful to yourself and others and has become socially unacceptable. It can happen to anyâ€" one! I know of a péerson firstâ€"hand who just happened to get drunk at the wrong time, the wrong place, and caused a fatal accident. He killed an older couple and a sixteenâ€" yearâ€"old girl in a T.C.C. shelter. He is the owner of a prosperous busiâ€" ness which is now rapidly going under as people find out who he is and what he has done. He, also, has a family of four children. I shuddered and my tears of sorrow began to stream down my bruised face. And as I observed the small frail child, silently screaming her last goodâ€"bye, I dropped to the pavement, my heart breaking as I fell. I knelt there clutching myself, drenched in tears.
