While similar units have come and gone, the Town of Oakville Airâ€"Water Rescue Force owes its longevity to a seemingly bottomâ€" less wellâ€"spring of resolute volunâ€" teers from every walk of life. Today there are more than 100, including doctors, lawyers and even well known local painter Alan Kingsland. Not all are boaters and 28 don‘t even live in Oakville. While most enjoy being out on the water, membership requires training in seamanship, boat hanâ€" dling, Coast Guard search and rescue techniques, First Aid, CPR, radio, radar, helicopter resâ€" cue and more. "It‘s not just a boat ride," says past rear commander Doug Clouse. All these skills are well worth 40th anniversary the effort. (Two crews stand by on weekâ€" ends and holidays.) When not always onâ€"site at the harbor, they can be summoned by cellular phone and be out on the water in less than half an hour. Calls range from overdue boaters who have run out of fuel to plane crashes. Past commander and coâ€"founder Harold Bartman recalled the time they found a boater drunk and lost near the St. Lawrence Cement pier. It was midnight and he had his children with him. Rear commander Herman Vandersteen remembers a 6 a.m. call when a woman drove off Ninth Line right into the lake. He also told of the time they found a man who had been carried out 10 miles on his sailboard. On August 13, 1963 13 boats were capsized by a freak storm. A clock and commemorative plaque affixed to a piece of mast hangs on the wall to this day, a testaâ€" ment to TOWARF‘s service.
