Unless, that is, you‘ve just set a bantam boys triathlon record. That‘s exactly what Alexander Smith, 14, of Mississauga, accomplished at last weekend‘s Ontario Combined Events Championships in Windsor. A 4.5 metre per second following wind, however, was too much to be within the allowable limit for a "legal" event, meaning that Smith‘s score, although 118 points better than the listed provincial record, does not enter the record book. On the other hand it did eam him the gold medal to go with the one he captured in January at the Indoor Combined Events Championships at York University. Posting personal records in all three events, Smith handled the 80 metre hurdles (eight barriers) in 12.35 seconds, tossed the discus 31.02 metres and flew 4.86 metres in the long jump. Oakville‘s Joe Denes, 23, was also on track, setâ€" ting new personal records in all ten of his decathlon events in the senior men‘s competition and earning himself an invitation to the Commonwealth Games Trials in Victoria July 27â€"28. Neil Evans, 19, recorded five personal records of his own in winning the silver medal in the junior men‘s decathlon. Evans travels to Ottawa for the world junior trials on June 29â€"30.
