The closing will throw 18 employees of the 2284 Speers Road warehouse out of work. Major Donald Hollingworth, public relations director for the Greater metro Area of the Salvation Army, said the Oakville warehouse, which had been used to sort used clothing and furniture donations, had been losing an average of $15,000 a month for the past three years. "We‘re not in the business to make money, but we have to break even," said Hollingworth. The Oakville Salvation Army wareâ€" house was opened nine years ago as part of the organization‘s efforts to decentralâ€" ize its warehouse facilities in Toronto. The 20,000â€"squareâ€"foot Oakville warehouse served two Salvation army Thrift stores in Oakville and one each in Mississauga, Milton and Streetsville. But while other warehouses in Markham and Brampton are "holding their own," Hollingworth said the Oakville facility was loosing money. In a letter presented to all Oakville warehouse employees, Salvation Army Envoy Gerald Haggett, stated," ...the purpose of The Salvation army Thrift Stores is to raise funds for the support of various programs offered by The Salvation Army. Unfortunately, the Oakville warehouse operation has been losing money for some time. This puts us in the position of drawing from the very fund we exist to support. The Salvation Army is not prepared to allow this situation to continue." One Oakville warehouse employee told the Beaver the Speers Road wareâ€" house was being closed because its employees were not unionized, while workers at the Toronto facility were L7 Â¥ TM CLEANING UP THE WORLD STARTS AT H@ME From the Gang *.~ at Oakville Nissan! 18 jobs lost unionized.
