Jennifer Bondarenko said she was safely off the plane before she even realâ€" ized what had happened. "I looked back and I saw this foam and I said, ‘Oh, my God, the plane is on fire‘." The 15â€"yearâ€"old said flight 243 to Chicago had just taken off from Pearson about 6:05 p.m. Wednesday, when a rear engine exploded. The DCâ€"10 had already climbed to 6,000 feet. "We were like going up and then all of a sudden there was a bang," Jennifer said, in a telephone interview from San Diego. "We kind of leveled off and then I think we circled around once maybe and the captain came on and said we were landing again at Pearson." Jennifer â€" who had never flown before and was traveling alone â€" said she had no idea why they were returning to the airport. After they landed, she said she looked out of her window and saw a spray of foam hit the plane. "It looked like rain, but it was foam. I didn‘t even think anything of it." Stewardesses then ordered the approximately 300 passengers to evacuâ€" ate and forced them to slide down an escape chute, said Jennifer, a Grade 9 student at White Oaks Secondary School. No one seemed to panic, she said. "They were pushing us out the door. We had to jump and when we got to the bottom most people ran out to the field because we thought the plane was going to explode or something like that. We looked at the plane and the whole back part was covered in foam and there were fire trucks coming." Jennifer â€" who believes her seat was directly over the wing where the engine "A fine school of W exploded â€" was unharmed in the evacuation. Four others received slight injuries. The | passengers later learned that airport fire crews doused the burning engine Jennifer Bondarenko . before they got off the plane. Jennifer‘s â€" mother, Lenore Bondarenko, said she and her husband, Ron, a company executive, were having supper at home about 7:30 p.m. when Jennifer‘s grandmother, Barbara Webber, called from Mississauga. "She had heard it on the news and she asked me what flight did Jennifer leave on." When Webber told her there was a fire on board a United Airlines flight, Bondarenko said her heart stopped and she immediately called the airline. She soon learned it was her daughter‘s flight. ‘"He (airline official) said everything was okay, but I was still really conâ€" cemned." She felt calmer when seconds later another airline official called and put her daughter on the phone. Bondarenko said they had to pick up Jannifer from the airport because the airâ€" line said she was too young to travel on her own on the last flight of the day to Chicago. However, the next morning United Airlines gave Jennifer a first class seat to Chicago. The girl later transferred to San Diego where she is now on a twoâ€" week visit with her friend, Rachel Prystie, 15, formerly of Oakville. "It‘s kind of scary," Bondarenko said of her daughter‘s maiden flight. ‘"We know a lot of people that fly all the time and nothing happens. The first time she gets on a plane and this hapâ€" pens." But Bondarenko said her daughter â€" who has looked forward to the San Diego trip for six weeks â€" has taken the mishap in stride. "I was surprised at her reaction," said ied outstanding quality"‘ MacLachlan College We are a coâ€"educational independent school, Junior Kindergarten to Grade 13/0AC.
