Firstly: life,‘ " Buxton explained. Take an aspirin each morning, walk 15 to 20 miles per week, eat a low fat and low cholesterol diet, carry nitroglycerine with you at all times, and don‘t smoke. Six months after surgery, Buxton ran the Toronto Marathon in three hours, 53 minutes and 56 seconds. He qualified Seventhly: Ontario Schedule "C" Schedule "B" THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Buxton‘s saga began New Year‘s Eve, 1991. While celebrating in Oakville, he announced that 1991 was to be a "terrific year for me, a good year." He followed up that optimism by participating, for the first time, in His cardiologist at Joseph Brant Hospital, Dr. John Kendall, and his surâ€" geon at the Hamilton General, Dr. Stephanie Brister, both planned to be with him at the Boston Marathon; howâ€" ever, both cancelled at the last minute. Kendall, Buxton‘s running mentor â€" a man in his 60s who runs 10 kilometres before arriving at the hospital at 8 a.m. weekdays, mjured himself the week before at a race in London. And Brister, who had made all of her arrangements, cancelled because "she felt her patients needed her more. She‘s funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation. ‘It‘s what you people do for people like me," Buxton told volunteers who raise funds for cardiovascular disease, heart attack and stroke research. "I‘m 39 years old, married, lead a healthy life, and I have no heart problems." for the Boston Marathon with a ‘cardiac exemption‘ stipulating he would have to finish the race in under four hours to qualify. Otherwise, for a person in his age category, the race would have to be completed in three hours and 15 minâ€" He was hospitalized for a week, and released with his ‘prescription for life.‘ Buxton began walking the first day he was out of the hospital, starting on a 2.5â€" mile route he established for himself. Tired of walking, he started running. "Nine weeks and five days after my heart attack, I run my very first race," said Buxton, a 10â€"kilometre race in Promotion with this coupon until July 4th. His mother insisted he visit his family physiâ€" cian, Dr. Jack Stanborough of Burlington. "He whisked me in for an ECG, an electrocardiogram and said: ©You‘ve had a heart attack and I think you‘re having more heart attacks.‘ " Stanborough called Buxton‘s father to drive him to Joseph Brant Hospital "where an emergency team (headed by Kendall) will be waiting for you. ‘"The next morning, I felt OK. I felt weak, but that donut was gone. I knew everything would be fine, I just had the flu or something." Buxton went to work. He‘s a salesman for Promark Printing in Hamilton. The next day "the donut was back" and Buxton called his mother. After the game, Buxton went to Tim Hortons, but a coffee and cigarette "wouldn‘t go down." He spent the next day on the couch, and that night, couldn‘t sleep comfortable, being sick to his stomach three times overnight. "It felt like I had eaten a donut withâ€" out chewing it first. It felt like I just swallowed it and it sat right there," he recalled, fist clenched to his chest. Hamilton‘s New Year‘s Day Polar Bear Dip.
