Former Oakville midget played with top draft pick â€"â€"Things "kind of came together" after being traded early on in the season from the North York Rangers to the Thornhill Islanders of the Metro Junior A hockey league. Former Oakville tripleâ€"AAA midget hockey player Patrick Russell can attest to the benefits that a change of scenery can sometimes bring. The 19â€"yearâ€"old White Oaks Secondary School student was named the team‘s best defenceman and was subsequently awarded the plaque as the best defenceman in the Bauer Division. The team finished second in the Bauer Division and were beat out in the second round of the playoffs by the firstâ€"place Wexford team. Ironically, one of Russell‘s fellow blueliners, Jeff Brown, was the top pick in the recent Ontario Hockey League draft. "He‘s an excellent player," said Russell. Oakville continued where they left off in the third quarter with newcomâ€" er Mike Cacador engmeenng a one-pomt safety on the opening kickâ€"off and Cliff Woodley running in a nineâ€"yard major (converted by Mike Jackson). Toronto Eagles finally struck for their own major on a sevenâ€"yard run by Chad Kennedy (converted by Gavin Lawrence) but Oakville‘s Rob Baylis ran the subsequent kickâ€"off back 80 yards (converted by Mike Jackson). "That broke their back pretty good," said coach Tony Molnar. The Longhorns added a twoâ€"point safety as well as a fourthâ€"quarter field goal to round out the scoring. â€" The Longhorns rushed for 151 yards on 31 carries. Steve Taylor shoulâ€" dered the brunt of the work chalking up 48 yards on nine carries. In the air, Demerling engineered a 267â€"yard blitz, going 23 for 32. He threw three touchdown passes and gave up one interception.
