According to Town of Oakville cemeteries coâ€"ordinator Heather Turenne, the damage was discovered June 22nd when a Parks and Recreation Department crew arrived in the morning to open the gates. Halton Regional Police were immediately summoned as were cemetery staff repâ€" resentatives. D\ arely a year after the town ralâ€" lied to renovate Old Oakville # Cemetery, the Lyons Lane site has fallen prey once again to vanâ€" dals. "There was minimal irreparable damage," said Turenne, explaining this is the first such incident since a conâ€" certed effort was mounted last year to spruce up the site. "It‘s so emotionally disturbing for families who go to the cemetery to visit and find the markers of their loved ones toppled," said Turenne. The vehicle access gates to Old Oakville Cemetery used to be left open, but chronic vandalism forced the Town to close them at night. It is always open to pedestrians, however. The problem is, with the larger gates closed police are unable to drive through the site on their routine patrols. Once inside they found that 17 grave markers had been vandalized, most of them toppled. Fortunately the majority remained in one piece, although one stone was broken. Turenne said the Town will contact a monument company to right the fallâ€" en stones at a cost of approximately $1,000. But money, of course, is not the object. Last summer the cemetery â€" which contains the remains of some of Oakville‘s founders â€" appeared to have nearly surrendered to vandalism and neglect. After being made aware of the situation, a variety of local individuals, service clubs and businesses expressed interest in rehabilitating the site. Oakview Funeral Home, for examâ€" ple, contacted Sanderson Monument Co. Inc., a firm with which it does business, and paid the cost of righting the markers.
