There‘s a Chisholm Street, a Chisholm School, and a Chisholm Centre. It seems like the history of Oakville is riddled with Chisholms. The first was Colonel William Chisholm, old "White Oak" himself, the son of a United Empire Loyalist and the founder of the town. One of his sons, Colonel George King Chisholm was the first Mayor in 1857. Another of William‘s sons, R.K., was responsiâ€" ble for building "Erchless" â€" the family estate still very much in evidence at the foot of Navy Street. Allan Chisholm â€" one of R.K.‘s children â€" was by all accounts a rather dashing sportsman and bachelor until his death at the young age of 52 in 1918. He lived at Erchless and helped to establish the Oakville Club while hobâ€"nobbing about town in one of the first autoâ€" mobiles to terrorize our streets. The definitive history of the town, of course, Oakville and the Sixteen, was penned by a Chisholm (albeit twice married), Hazel Hart Mathews, a greatâ€" granddaughter of the founder. (Oakville: A Small Town by Frances Robin Ahern is another interesting history of earlier residents.) Currently, the Oakville telephone directory lists an even dozen Chisholms. The diminutive Dan Chisholm is but one. Dan is the greatâ€"great grandson of George Chisholm, our town founder‘s father. His roots run strong and deep in Oakville. Asked in a recent interview if the name ‘Chisholm‘ has been a help or a hindrance to him in his life, he chuckled, "Never been a hindrance, as far as I know. Of course, it might have been â€" without me knowing." The fact is he never gave it much thought. / 1395 Abbeywood Dr. 825â€" We handpaint wall clocks, Since 1938, Dan has lived in a charming little house on Trafalgar Road; though, when the old Melancthon Simpson house was built, around 1837, the muddy, potâ€"holed thoroughfare that ran past the front door was called Dundas Street or more colloquiâ€" ally, River Road. Some folks even called it Station Road after 1855 because it went up past the new railâ€" way station. In any case, Dan has grown up in Oakville, since the age of five. By some trick of fate, he had been born in the town of Galt, Ontario (now part of Cambridge), in the year 1905, though his parents Frank and Lizzie Chisholm were Oakville people, before and after. Lizzie was one of six McCraney girls, whose parents farmed the land around Fourth Line before Appleby College was established in 1911. Dan‘s older brothers and sisters â€" James, Brock, Faith, and Justina had all been born here in town. He and his brother Herbert came along in those few years while the family lived in Galt. As a boy â€" Dan and his buds â€" played shinny on the creek in the long winters. Do you know what shinny is," he asked? Loosely organized hockey? He laughed, "Loosely organized â€" and loosely equipped." In the summers, they swam in the lake and someâ€" times in the creek.
