Unlike r those of us living in the urban areas of Halton, water is someâ€" thing we can almost take for granted. Our supply is treated, tested, and delivered to our home. A Diffe public supplies, private ones aren‘t monitored or treated by the municipalâ€" ity. This fact prompted the Health Department to conduct a study last year of private well water quality. Well water is more often known as groundwater. The term means simply TIVNNNY AL3JIDOS 1SOH NVIQGYVNYO 1HL THE OAKVILLE BEAVER water that is found underground. All water on Earth is interconnected in a system called the Water Cycle. While this cycle has no real beginning or end, let‘s start with oceans and lakes. Coliform are a group of bacteri; that can indicate the possible presence of fecal contamination in wate Coliform found in large numbers i1 groundwater can mean that contami nation from a faulty septic tank sys tem or other point source of contamiâ€" nation is entering the well. * Have your well tested twice pe year for bacteria. The Healt Department offers this service at n! cost to Halton residents. For more information abou, ground water quality in Halton, con tact the Environmental Healt Division of the Halton Region Health Department â€" Oakville 825 6211. Health Notes is a monthly column pr pared by staff of the Halton Regional Healt Department. Junior naturalist program at Bronte Creek Small numbers of coliform usuall mean that rain water or surface runâ€"0 is finding its way into the well an bringing a small amount of nation with it. This latter situation wa found to be most common in Halto especially among dug or bored well less than 10.5 metres (35 feet) deep. * Make sure the well has a water tight lid that is properly positioned an in good repair. * Check that the casing of the we (the metal or concrete walls of th well) extend above the surface of th ground at least 30 cm. * Inspect the casing of the well fe cracks or faulty seams that coul allow surface water to enter. * Ensure the ground around th well slopes away from it and tha water does not pond around the cas The regional well water stud involved sampling almost 300 well selected at random throughout th region. The results of the study indi cated that while groundwater qualit in Halton was generally good, man: wells may have structural problem that allow coliform bacteria to ente them. Fortunately, protecting a well fron surface contamination can be simpl and inexpensive: waterâ€"bearing rock and soil fo tions called aquifers. Depending the nature of the aquifer, water c move either qu1ckly or slowly. F example, water in sand aquifers ten to move quickly, while water in cl aquifers tends to move slowl Groundwater eventually resurfaces i the form of springs, or as a replenist ment to surface bodies of water. into the ground where it will move j ground, or in the soil and rock for tions it moves through. Fortunatel most aquifers tend to act as filters actually remove contaminants water moves through them. Howeve this filter mechanism can be "sho circuited" if water moves throug fractured rock (such as the Niagar Escarpment) or if wells tapping th aquifer are poorly constructed. Groundwater has the potential t come in contact with many con nants, either from the surface of th July 6, 19
