_ Midget makes short list for Ont. team An Oakville player has made the short list for the provincial underâ€"17 allâ€"star hockey team. _ The team that is selected will be representing Ontario at the Canada Winter Games in Grande Prairie, Alberta from Feb. 19â€"25. Michael Hanson, a student at Loyola Secondary School, suited up this past season with Oakville‘s tripleâ€" AAA midget hockey team which won the Ontario Minor Hockey Association title but were stopped just short at the Air Canada regional tournament in Ottawa. Among the players on the 1991 defending champion team were Chris Pronger, Brent Tully, Brandon Convery, Mike Peca and Todd Warriner. These Grasshoppers from Preston England (striped shirts) certainly showed they have learned a few lessons about rugby as they totally dominated Oakville‘s Crusaders in an exhibition match last weekâ€" end. The Crusaders will be looking for better luck this Saturday as it hosts a busy afternoon of rugby. On the men‘s side, the Crusaders lock horns with Ajax with the the third division game slated for noon, the second division game for 1:30 p.m. and the firstâ€"division game for 3 p.m. The lady Crusaders will cap off the afternoon, hosting Burlington at 4:30 p.m. (Photo by Barrie Erskine) " SPORTS The 40 players, who will be further evaluated, were 0 among 84 players from across the province who attendâ€" ed the provincial underâ€"17 camp held at the University of Waterloo from June 24â€"29. The forty identified players will continue to be monâ€" itored during September, October and November. Final team selections should be completed by December. Oakville‘s tripleâ€"AAA midget team also contributed four players to the recent OHL draft â€" Brent Strike (taken 97th by Sarnia), Marcel Kars (taken 142nd by Sault Ste. Marie), B.J. Hamilton (taken 174th by Sault Ste Marie) and Darryl Curtis (taken 223rd by North Bay). To David Ferguson and Peter Crnogorac of Oakwille, both $10,000 winners! Races, which get underway at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day, will feature fields of 50 to 100 riders with speeds of up to 60 km/h on the downtown streets. It‘s the first time a sporting event of this magnitude is being held in the downtown core and huge crowds are expected. On Sunday, July 31, Downtown Oakville, along with Amex, the Oakville Cycle Club and Bolle Canada, will host the first annual Lakeshore Criterium.
