B Early active therapy is the primary goal of Chiropractors in restoring joint function of vehicle accident victims. im Particularly in whiplash and whiplash related impact injuries, early manual adjustments have been shown to be more effective than treatments such as prescribed rest, immobilization through collars, or drugs like muscle relaxants, pain killers or antiâ€"â€"inflammatories. (Chiropractic Report; March, 1994; Vol. 8; no. 2) A whiplash neck injury is the involuntary thrust of the head in any direction. The resulting recoil of the head and neck into opposite direction injures the surrounding and supporting tissues. Symptoms may not start immediately. Often neck soreness may occur, then disappear and be followed later by head, neck and arm symptoms. Many factors influence the amount of pain noted after an accident, including the speeds at which the vehicles were travelling at the time of impact, whether or not seat belts were in use, the age of the victim, their tolerance to pain, and the existence of underlying degenerative conditions. The most common cause is automobile collision. However, a quick jerk, a violent blow to the head or chin, or any kind of fall causing sudden forceful movement of the head and neck is also common. Sports injuries involving collisions or contact, as well as diving injuries frequently cause whiplash. The forces causing the whiplash may result in concussion, bruising or tearing to the soft tissues, and may produce strains, sprains, subluxations (vertebral misalignments), and dislocations. Joint injuries are common, and in severe cases fractures may occur. Pressure on the spinal nerves as they exit from between the neck vertebrae (vertebral subluxation) is a very common cause of symptoms. This may lead to headaches, upper back and arm pain, numbness, tingling or burning of the arm/hand. Low back pain may follow whiplash injury as a complication of the accident/injury. Often secondary symptoms of trauma do not surface for weeks to months following the accident. Other seemingly unrelated symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, ear noises, difficulty swallowing and moodiness/depression may also be related to the injury. Initially there may be acute muscular spasm and inflammation. Long term soft tissue damage will leave the vertebral joints unstable and lead to future arthritic and disc problems years later. Chiropractors evaluate the biomechanical function of the spine through hands on palpation. An adjustment is given to the subluxation to restore normal nerve, disc, and joint function. Xrays are another valuable diagnostic tool and exercises and other rehabilitive therapies can also be used to strengthen and correct the spine and vertebral subluxation complex. If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident: FIRST â€" Be sure there is no life threatening emergency situation. Acute trauma care is a speciality of the medical profession in a hospital emergency setting. SECOND â€" Don‘t wait for the pain to subside before seeing a chiropractor. Gentle spinal care in the first few days after an injury can save weeks or months in the long term recovery. THIRD â€" Apply ice NOT heat for the first two days. Use a cervical collar as little as possible. Studies have shown that collar use prolongs the recovery period substantially. The recovery period for whiplash injuries varies widely. A slight bump in a parking lot might take months, while a spectacular "write off" accident may recover quickly. Recovery times for mild to moderate injuries may take from 4â€"18 months, while severe injuries may require 2 years or more. Regardless of the severity of the accident, it is critical that care be started soon after the injury and rehabilitation recommended by your chiropractor be completed. For your information: Chiropractic care is fully covered under the provisions of the "No Fault" Automobile Insurance Act in Ontario. The legislation ensured that companies reâ€"imburse all expenses in a timely manner (withing 30 days of the application). The Ontario Insurance Commission at 1â€"800â€"668â€"0128 supervises the benefits system and resolves disputes to the No Fault Insurance system. If you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident you should see a doctor of chiropractic.
