Eventually, it may end up as a cottage on some northern wooded lot. sevenâ€"yearâ€"old building it will replace. The amount raised towards the new schoolhouse so far is $60,000 which includes income of $8,000 from the sale of the old building, said Don MacDonald of the Oakville Optimists. Another $70,000 is still needed to pay for the new building. Why a new schoolhouse? According to MacDonald, the old one was bursting at the seams. ‘‘When it was first built, it was anticipated that about 4,000 chilâ€" dren would go through it each year," he said. "Now it‘s 18,000 a year." Dickinson said a total of 79,000 chilâ€" dren have received instruction since the village opened in 1987, the first of its kind in the world. Since then, its reputaâ€" tion has spread so far and wide that it a28s h9. fom‘1 “om s‘%ï¬ arefodes from 12. T 174 P fmon®" [ MA l MAZDA s nc ExaMPLE ea 9 .. Locally, it is so popular that it is fully booked within six weeks after school opens every September. "For the first three or four weeks after school opens, I take about 80 calls a day from teachers," said Dickinson, who conducts three safety classes a day. He added that parents are anxious to have their children learn the safety rules, not just in the classroom, but by practisâ€" ing them as they walk, cycle or drive small cars through the village. Following classroom instruction, groups of six children each put their newâ€"found knowledge to work in a pracâ€" tical sense as they make their way to destinations within the village. The Safety Village is complete with miniaâ€" ture church, gas station, bank, Canadian Tire store, town hall, police station (with a tiny cell), Rotary Centre, grocery store and McDonald‘s, all sponsored by variâ€" ous service groups and businesses. MacDonald said needed repairs on the buildings "are pretty well looked after by the sponsorships." This year‘s unreâ€" newed Becker‘s store sponsorship has been taken up by Shoppers‘ Drug Mart. But back to the school. It‘s an onâ€" going enterprise that continues throughâ€" out the year â€" except for this year. For "three or four weeks" during the sumâ€" mer, it holds safety classes for special groups such as the physically handiâ€" capped. "You never know how many lives have been saved because of this village," said Mac McDonald of the Oakville Optimits. "The children remember what they learn here." The Optimist clubs of Oakville, Milton, Georgetown, Burlington and Upper Burlington are anxious that the new schoolhouse be completed by Sept. 10th, To this end, they are selling raffle tickets for a Caribbean Cruise and an original painting by artist John van der To make donations or to buy raffle tickets, contact Don MacDonald at 847â€" 6628 or Mac McDonald at $27â€"0537. e Any colour e Any size _ e Any size ' M poB Bnol:r 1;3"“â€5 B 6 $ OF FA CS SERVICE SELECTION QUALITY PRICE M Mon.Wed. 10:00â€"5:30 Thur.â€"Fri. 10:00â€"9:00 Sat. 9:00â€"5:00 Sun.12:00â€"5:00 "ONTARIO‘S LARGEST VOLUME DISCOUNT BLIND OUTLE bottom weights and chains and all installation hardware !
