August 3, 1994 Our Style is Energy Efficient. > o you have a natural love of Dv plants and the great outdoors * and would like to enjoy both all year round â€"â€" regardless of the weather? If so, you‘d probably enjoy a solarium. these unique glass rooms are added right onto your home, extending your living space. They can be enjoyed right through any season â€" rain or shine â€" and tend to be far more flexible than the conservatories, and sunrooms of Citorian and Edwardian times. The roses at the Oakville Horticultural Society show were so poor that the Red Rose Trophy was not awarded. This was the effect of the heat, heavy rain, and high humidity on the growth cycle. Sheridan Nurseries roses were in great shape last week for the annual rose trials. Their horticulturist, Larry Sherk, was our host. Sheridan Nurseries are very interested in improving the colors of the yellow and blue varieties so these came in for special notice. An old white variâ€" ety noticed for its beauty and growth in a local garden and temporarily named â€" "Sherk‘s White" â€" was also being tested while attempts were made to find its name. These trials and the comments and comparisons of the rosarians inspecting the plants help to select those to be propagated for sale each year. Designed for comfort â€" for people as well as plants â€" a solarium can be as flamboyant or as simple as you want to make it. Solariums can double as sitting or reading rooms, or provide a unique setting for gracious entertaining. They also provide excellent recreation areas for plant enthusiasts. Even if you don‘t have a green thumb, you can still fill your solarium with lots of greenery simply by buying lifeâ€"like artificial plants. Unlike their live counterparts, these "plants" require minimal care â€" merely occasional A rose is not just a rose; lawns should be sown soon 10285â€"6th Line, R.R. #3 Georgetown, Ont. I was impressed with "Graham Thomas" â€" a multiâ€"petalled golden yellow. The Austin‘s combine the repeat flowering and wide color range of the modern hybrid tea with the hardiness, disease resistance, rose form, and fragrance of the older shrub roses. The budding teams were working nearby on next year‘s crop. The root stock is planted in the spring and hilled up slightly. This provides a longer grafting area on the underâ€" ground bark. In most solariums, one entire wall and part of all of the ceiling, are generâ€" ally constructed of thick, thermal glass. Frames can be made of wood or aluâ€" minum. They are usually constructed at the rear of a home, but can also be added to the front or side. If you decide to have one installed, be sure to check your municipal bylaws to see what perâ€" mits you require. Modern solariums are designed to blend in with the style and mood of a home â€" whether it‘s contemporary or oldâ€"fashioned, wood frame or brick. A solarium should be aesthetically pleasâ€" ing from both the outside as well as the inside of the home. and since this type of room usually ends up as a major focal feature of a home, it should be strategically located near the dining, living or family room â€" perhaps even the kitchen. In July, the budding sticks arrive from worldâ€"wide sources and from their own plants. A team of two preâ€" cedes the budding team and hoes back the earth. The budder bends the main stem over and holds it down cleaning. The key to designing and installing a successful solarium lies in the planâ€" ning stages. Keep in mind that a solariâ€" um must be large enough to allow air to circulate. It should also be situated so that it receives several hours of sunlight each day. A steady flow of light will help your plants flourish. In the winter, sunlight is an excellent source of addiâ€" tional heat. A solarium should have the followâ€" ing, basic features: * a floor that can withstand water; * a ceiling that will admit enough natural light; with his foot. He makes a ‘T‘ cut on the stem, lifts the corners with a wedge at the other end of the knife, cuts a bud from the bud stick, trims and inserts it under the bark. He moves on and the second man applies the inch wide elastic which is held by an open staple. When the bud ‘takes‘ and starts to grow, the root stock top is removed. This bush will be ready for digging next fall. We also visited Sheridan‘s new rose testing and assessment area. It looks like they will be introâ€" ducing some worthy roses over the next few years. So it is about time to start the process. The next step is to choose a grass mixture. The standard is a mix of Kentucky Bluegrass, Fescues, and Turf type perennial ryegrass. In 1992, I tried a mixture without Kentucky Bluegrass because I wantâ€" ed a low water, hot ground, partial shade mixture for an area alongside 15 year Warranty in Ontario on Canadiana 1175 North Service Road West Building Suite #102, Oakville LOOK FOR CEILING FANS SIGN SALE FLAGS ON BUILDING NORTH SERVICE ROAD, OAKVILLE A Fan for All Seaso GDTH QUIET EFFICIENT Final Sellâ€"Off Your Mirror Closet Specialists the road. It has grown well and is indistinguishable from the original Bluegrass mix. When the ground is prepared, seeds may be spread with a seed spreader or by hand. By sowing in both directions, the seed may be spread uniformly. Recently, Oseco has introduced a Water Saver mixture of tall fescue cultivars for home and low mainteâ€" nance lawns. Each mat is three feet wide by 20 feet long and weighs When decorating, try to choose colâ€" ors that are bright and warm to the eye. Also keep in mind that if you intend to put a lot of plants and flowers in your solarium, it will probably become humid. So be sure to pick furniture that can withstand this type of atmosphere. The third method is to use sod. If you‘re planning a solarium that‘s large and dramatic, it‘s a good idea to choose giant plants, trees and shrubs to fill it. Consult your local greenhouse or an indoor gardening expert to see which varieties would be best. Plants like the umbrella tree or weeping fig can grow to substantial heights and fill space very effectively and elegantly. A large cacâ€" tus can also be attractive and doesn‘t require as much watering. If the lawn is patchy or thin, overâ€" seeding may be sufficient for rejuveâ€" nation. This is done by first verticutâ€" ting it using a special rented machine and aerating if necessary. After rakâ€" ing up the debris, add a quarterâ€"inch of soil and rake it in. Lightly roll and seed.
