Environmental ‘consultant will help Shell with demolition wor (Continued from page 4) scheduled to be completed by Christmas. Shell Canada targeted specific companies which might have been interested in purchasing the centre, but despite some interest were unable to sell. Petroâ€"Canada did buy the dock facility in December 1993. The Research Centre was opened in 1970 and won the prestigious Massey Medal for Architecture for Shore Moffat and Partners â€" a Toronto architectural firm that same year. The building was also singled out for an Ontario Association of Architects Design Award for an addition to the structure in 1977. After the demolition â€" which will spare all trees on the property â€" the 47â€"acre parcel will be seeded and left fallow until residential development commences after conâ€" struction of the Bronte Creek bridge. A substantial part of Shell‘s 625 acres of land in the area will join the former Research Centre property and be developed at that time, _ according â€" to â€" Jack Witherspoon, Shell Canada‘s Property Marketing Coâ€"ordinator. Heavy equipment work will be done between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and there will be onâ€"site security which will also take community complaints 24 hours a day. Shell has instituted a dust control and noise abatement program for the project and is working closely with Linda Lynch, of Environment Watch, who has been hired as a conâ€" sultant for the project. "If we want . . to succeed i in the greening of corporate Canada, environmenâ€" _ falists can‘t be negative all the time." "I sit as an environmental conâ€" science for Shell‘s corporate plans," Lynch said. "I‘m here to allow the local community and Shell to talk to one another. The programs are not windowâ€"dressing. I‘m pleased with Shell‘s response to my comments and input." Lynch circulated a newsletter to 1,400 local residents explaining the demolition procedure and informing them of Tuesday‘s meeting, which drew dozens of concerned locals. Many of the programs instituted by Shell for the Research Centre demoâ€" lition came out of community input when Shell recently constructed the Toronto Marketing Plant to produce lubricants. Lynch won a Canadian Environmental Citizenship Award in 1992. She is involved in waste management and site contamination issues. "If we want to succeed in the greening of corporate Canada, enviâ€" ronmentalists can‘t be negative all the time," she said. "We need to build bridges and put people and companies together so they both benefit." s U M ME R S ALE A ND VA LU ES <. 2 0/ OFrF ce ; 5 A) ALREADY REDUCED L. WALL DEcor DEcoratTIVE AccEssoriEs!
