And at the store‘s Aug. 24 grand reâ€"opening and ribbonâ€"cutting ceremony, Cy Cumiskey, Viceâ€"President Store Management and Operations, Kmart Canada, will unveil the national retailer‘s distinctive new corporate logo. Many Oakville customers have reacted favorably to the changes which have transformed the Oakville location, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary in November. The store has been transformed into a shopping experiâ€" ence for the ‘90s, and the dramatic differences are immediâ€" ately apparent. For starters, rows of heavy duty shopping carts are available at the store‘s mall and Rebecca Street entrances. And the two new courtesy wheelchairs are provâ€" ing very popular with customers, notes Mrs. Butler. "On Saturdays, they‘re in use nearly all the time." Once inside, everything is easy to find. To get your bearâ€" ings, consider a quick trip to a new display equipped with copies of recent flyers, and nearby, a ‘Saving Centre‘ â€" a computerized kiosk which gives shoppers coupons for savâ€" ings over and above what‘s advertised in company flyers. The Saving Centre also provides a convenient schematic of the store layout. But the ample signage in each departâ€" "People really like the new look," noted Betty Butler, the store‘s administration manager. "It‘s spread out a little more, but everything is easier to find. They especially like the increased selection in every department, and the wider aisles." _ _ Formerly located in the same space as women‘s fashions, the chilâ€" dren‘s fashion section has grown into a distinct department on its own. To achieve the extra floor space, the inâ€"store cafeteria was closed, storage space was reduced, and the renovation absorbed the former Bargain Harold‘s site in the mall, explained store manager, Frank Caltagirone. "There‘s a lot more merchandise out on the floor, which means better selection for our customers. If you require assistance, the store has been equipped with bright blue customer service panels in several key locations. Mounted on pillars, they‘re also easy to find. The shopper simply presses a button (located out of the reach of children), and a message is broadcast through the store, requestâ€" ing the presence of a store employee in that department. Store employees have been ‘crossâ€"trained‘ in a variety of functions, and can speedily switch from floor duties to the checkout. Other smart moves: the portrait stuâ€" dio, which used to be located in the centre of the store, has its own selfâ€" contained space adjacent to the toy department. In the same area there are newly installed wheelchairâ€"accessible washâ€" rooms. As for the merchandise itself, there‘s more of everything! The same attention to detail is everywhere, including the extensive fashion departments. Numerous walkâ€"through ‘fashâ€" ion walls‘ are vertical displays demonstrating creative clothing combinations. The women‘s clothing section features new lines from Kmart‘s Jaclyn Smith Collection, Ashley Taylor Petites and Ashley Taylor Lingerie, part of a wide range of Frank Caltagh'one. dress and casual fashions. Store Manager There‘s also an exciting Music Video section, featuring a large collection of chilâ€" dren‘s videos, a movie screen which continually plays new music videos and movies, and lots of CDs, cameras, TVs, etc. Technoâ€"kids will zero in on the interactive displays, where they can try out Sega and Super Nintendo games. NEW RESTAURANT If shopping gives you an appetite, then you‘ll appreciate this moveâ€"an ‘Eatery Express,‘ Kmart‘s new dining conâ€" cept, is currently being constructed just outside the store‘s mall entrance. The bold, brightly lit restaurant will serve soups and sandwiches, burgers, chicken fingers and other snacks, offering caféâ€"style seating in the mall. It is expectâ€" ed to open sometime in September. Overall, the ‘new look‘ Kmart is sure to make those Saturday morning shopping trips proceed much more smoothly. "There‘s nothing we don‘t have, and the quality is excelâ€" lent," Mrs. Butler notes proudly. "We have it all â€" a great new store with a huge selection, and many caring employees with years of experience."
