As frontdrive cars, early Hyundais, particularly the Stellar, were a textbook example of “understeer”, the car trying to continue straight when you want- ed to make a turn. While the Sonata was no worse or better than most of its peers, the mount- ing geometry of the suspension was totally changed and the switch to negative offset king pins at the front improved what’s called anti-dive when braking and anti-squat when accelerating. Hyundai drew in its horns and ordered what amounted to a com- plete re-engineering of the Sonata. The wheelbase and track were both enlarged and the steer- ing and suspension replaced. A vast amount of time and effort went into sound damping to smooth out the noise from tires,- engine compartment, and wind. Already one of the roomiest cars in class, the passenger compart- ment was made bigger and the trunk also enlarged thanks to the longer wheelbase. Somebody at Hyundai cracked the whip on quality of materials used in the cabin and it shows. Incidentally, using slim window pillars, lets drivers have a 308 degrees field of vision. Hyundai opened North America for Korean carmakers with the Pony which filled the bill for stout, if technologically-dated, transportation after the Mini ceased to be sold here. Today Excel and the Elantra are on a par with any of its competition. But at the topend, Hyundai tried to emulate the Camry/Accord juggernaut three and four years ago with the Sonata but could not equal the perceived quality-lreliability plateau of those cars due to the unfortunate Stellar. August 24, 1994 ’95 Sonata 11: the way to go This problem affects 37,076 units manufactured February 8, 1993 to August 1993 and includes the following models: HAC warns that certain models manufactured by Evenflo Juvenile Products Company may have a “latch” problem which could compromise the security of the system and the safety of a child occupant. tion with the Canadian Automobile Association and Transport Canada, has issued a warning to owners of Evenflo child car seats. When picking up the GLS at Hyundai Canada, I assumed I was getting a V6. On the highway it really moved along, the transmis- Prices I have effective Jan. 1, 1994 show the base GL with five speed listed at $14,995 and the CL V6 at $16,995. By compari- son the GLS with V6 lists at $19,495 and the GLS with the 2.0-litre at $18,495 which is the car tested here. The price of some options includes: $1.250 plus $100 tax for CFC-free air condi- tioning; $800 for power steering on the CL (its standard on the other car); anti-lock brakes avail- able only on the GLS at $995; power sun roof (GLS only) $950; and dual air bags on the GL (stan- dard on GLS) $900. It is available with a twin cam, 2.0-litre, l6-valve inline four- cylinder engine of 128 hp and 129 ft/lbs of torque. The other engine choice is a 3.0-litre, V6 of 142 hp and 168 ft/lbs of torque. The car is offered in two levels of trim, the GL and the GLS. Standard transmission on the GL with the 2.0 litre engine is a five-speed manual with a totally new four- speed electronic automatic an option. You can get the V6 on the GL but only with the autobox. The four and V6 are offered on the GLS but the only transmission choice is the four-speed automat- lC. The result of all this effort is the Sonata 11. 1995 Hyundai Sonata II HEBAKE SERVICE} The manufacturer advises that these models have a white or grey plastic sleeve which is posi- tioned immediately above the metal buckle tongue. This plastic sleeve can tear, split or the stitching can release which causes the sleeve to slide down over the top of the metal buckle tongue. When this happens, engagement of the tongue into the buckle is difficult and could create a “false latch” situation. Child car seats provide a secure travel environâ€" ment for children when they are used, installed I - 231122C, 231144C, 231170C, 231248C, 231486C, Champion - 224131C, 224136C, 224145C; and Scout - 224531C. Go power from that four- banger came as a surprise. I can imagine that with the five-speed manual, the GL is something of a sleeper. The V6 has more power, but it will use more fuel. For those seeking luxury appoint- ments and the frugality of a four- cylinder engine, this version of the Sonata 11 is the way to go. And it’s so darn quiet! My lad also likes to try and undo the safe- ty catch to his car seat. This time I actually heard him fiddling with the latch and caught him in the act - that’s how qul’et it is. The air conditioning/heating system of the Sonata is also much improved. Clearing mist inside was almost instantaneous. ' My son thinks it’s great fun to kick the back of daddy’s seat while driving. But in the Sonata 11 with the seat at the back of the runners (as I like it) he couldn’t do his usual tap dance. Where the Sonata II stands out is in capacious interior room and the quality of the paint, even over the last Sonata. sion being world-class in shifting and power delivery. But I noticed there was a some power lag off the line. Back at the office, the hood was opened to reveal the 2.0-litre four. Here I had been thinking the V6 was nice if a bit slow, only to find it was a four. No wonder it was a tad slow off the line as multi-valve fours tied to slush boxes need to get them- selves up to speed first before they can send power to the dri- ving wheels. THE OAKVILLE BEAVER The manufacturer advises that consumers may continue to use the seat as long as they ensure the buckle is properly fastened. HAC recommends Consumers can resolve this problem by calling Evenflo Juvenile Products Company at 1-800-689- 4434. The manufacturer will provide an instruc- tion sheet on how consumers can remove the plas- tic sleeve. Copies of the instruction sheet also have been made available to HAC. Consumers may wish to contact HAC at (416) 525-1210 to inquire about receiving a copy. and working properly, reports HAC. In this instance, the security provided by the seat would be degraded if the buckle isn’t properly latched.
