She is well known nationally as a speaker, seminar leader and author. Her latest book, For You: Adults with Learning Disabilities, is in its fourth printing and has received top reviews from adults who have learning disabilities. They say reading it is like looking in a mirror, that for the first time they feel as if someone really understands what they are going through. A former member of the national executive of National Access Awareness Week, Smith has also been recognized by the Federal Governemnt as a recipient of the Canada 125 Award and the National Volunteer Award. Schools have made significant advances in accommodating students who have learning disabilities since Smith began her career. As the recent Chair of Educational Access Services at George Brown College, Cathy was in the forefront of moving support services into the post secondary scene. She is now in the business of moving awareness of learning disabilities from the classroom to the workplace. She provides the practical help employers and employees need to make employment equity a reality for people with learning disabilities. She brings energy, enthusiasm and knowledge, as well as assessment, teaching and counselling skills to her new focus on workplace accommodations. Smith‘s training was originally as a special education teacher. She went back to school later to complete a graduate degree in vocational guidance with a specialty in learning disabilities. Now she is again back at school completing a doctoral degree in Applied Psychology. Her major research explores a new and practical way to identify learning disabilities. Although she specializes in working with adults, Smith also enjoys working with young people, whether or not they have learning disabilites, as they confront decisions about careers and post secondary options. Oakville is fortunate to have her in the community.
