Credit Valley, as does OTMH, wants children to have a positive learning experience and in so doing, it has been shown, they will cope better with the aspects of hospitalization should it ever become necessary, says Reid. "It‘s no different than adults. It‘s the: elementâ€"of .the unknown that‘ s vexyfi'ngh’fenmg"’shéa'dfls‘ * 5 469 ,.a,', "Is it going to hurt" is perhaps the number one question children ask folâ€" lowed by "What happens to the blood (after blood work)?" and ""Why do you take an Xâ€"ray?", says Mary Beth Reid, childlife worker, therapeutic/occupational therapy, paedeatrics, Credit Valley Hospital. Credit Valley has ventured in this direction before with its annual Teddy Bear Clinic at Erin Mills Town Centre and it has received "nothing but major positive feedback," she says. In fact, people wish the hospital would extend the Clinic or hold it more often throughout the year, adds Reid. Although the hospital conducts tours of the building and the emergenâ€" cy department, this is its first Teddy Bear Hospital, and it‘s designed for all children, not just those about to have an operation. Little people are welcome to bring along their teddybear (or doll) and visit a variety of stations manned by hospital staff, nurses and physicians: Admitting, emergency, Xâ€"ray, laboraâ€" tory, paedeatrics, rehab, dental and discharge. Upon entering the Teddy Bear Hospital, the child will receive a Teddy Bear chart and upon ‘disâ€" charge‘ they will receive an OTMH souvenir coloring book. The special hospital will operate Tuesday, Aug. 30th, Wednesday, Aug. 31st and Thursday, Sept. 1st at Oakville Place (Centre Court), between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. each day and will be an opportuâ€" nity for children to gain a better underâ€" standing of how a hospital functions, in a nonâ€"threatening environment, explains OTMH public relations spokesperson, Hilary Sadler. Hospitals aren‘t awful, scary places and that‘s the message Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital is going to try and convey to young members of the community next week with its Teddy Bear Hospital.
