Called the Home Team Project, the idea for a resident comedy team is the brainchild of Oakville Centre theatre manager, Ken Coulter. After several years of booking comedy teams into the Centre, Coulter decided to “change that idea and create something where the local community can actually par- ticipate.” “And comedy is hot,” he adds. Comedy is also more malleable, you can customize it to the commu- nity, unlike dance or jazz, offers Scott Watson one of the co-founders ‘ of Comedy on Wry, the theatrical sketch comedy troupe which Coulter has hired to teach and cre- ate The Home Team. “Our goal is not just to offer comedy classes but to create a group that can be self-sufficient as an ensemble,” says fellow Comedy on Wry-er Carol Lempert. All four Comedy on Wry mem- bers - including Kevin Wright and David Brinton - have worked in the industry for a number of years and have taught at such venues as Second City and Theatre Sports aside from appearing on stage, TV and radio. Comedy was chosen as Coulter’s second residency program because it’s a very accessible artform through which people can also learn to exercise creativity and imagina- tion, says Coulter. In 10 weeks of three hour ses- sions each Saturday, participants will learn improvisational skills, comedy writing techniques, scene study, character building and more, working from Theatresports’ founder Keith Johnstone’s textbook, Impro. Although the subject is comedy, the approach is serious. Participants are expected to commit themselves for the full 10 weeks, to do their ‘homework’, see the Comedy on Wry show at the Centre Oct. let and 22nd and rehearse for their own program to be presented in the Centre’s Studio Theatre Dec. 9th and 10th. Even for those who don’t want to be comedic performers but who want to write comedy, it would be beneficial “to see what performers go through even if it’s just once,” says Watson.
