She had fallâ€" en and ached all over, from top to toe. She needed Xâ€"rays, a blood test, and had to stay overnight in pediatrics. Of course, she first went to the emergency department, and before Buttercup leaves, she will stop at rehabilitation serâ€" vices to see if she needs any therapy before going home. And, on her way home, Buttercup visited the dentist, was told she has no cavities, and was given a bright red toothâ€" brush. Buttercup had fallen off her tricycle, and was not as badly hurt as her mother first feared, so the trip to the Teddy Bears‘ Hospital wasn‘t such a harrowing ordeal. Teddy Bears‘ Hospital? Yes, Buttercup is a much loved Teddy Bear, and they arrived clutched in the arms of curious children who came with the moms and dads to find out what a visit to the hosâ€" pital was all about. But, instead of going to a real hospital like Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, they took their Teddy Bears (or plush toys and dolls) to the Teddy Bears‘ Hospital at Oakville Place this past week. A temporary hospital was set up in the Centre Court of Oakville Place as part of the mall‘s Nuts About Kids sumâ€" mer series of activities for children. And, it may be one of its most successful programs. There is talk of making the demonstration an annual event, says public relations direcâ€" tor Trish Carlton, who kept track of the number of visiâ€" tors. "We opened to lineâ€"ups every morning," said Carlton, who along with other hospital staff, volunteered to run the "The whole idea is to help chilâ€" dren understand what happens to them so their visit to the hospital won‘t be so scary for them." Carlton, who worked a double shift last Wednesday, counted 25 visitors per hour. That statistic held up, with about 500 Teddy Bears visâ€" iting the temporary hospital. The Teddy Bears‘ Hospital was open Tuesday to Thursday, last week, mornings, afternoons and evenings. "It was great," says Lois Rush, a registered practical nurse who was stationed in emergency. "The kids just loved it. "The kids really got into it, explaining how things hapâ€" pened to their Teddy Bears, and asking questions about what is happening to them (at the hospital). "The worst case I‘ve seen today was a teddy with a heart that wasn‘t beating properly, so I had to give IV (intravenous), oxygen, and put him on the heart monitor. I think he‘s going to make it." Most of her cases, she said, were broken bones, ear aches, and so on. "I put a lot of splints on legs and arms," and she sent a lot of the Teddy Bears‘ to the Xâ€"ray departâ€" ment. Here Lorraine Farrow, who works in health promoâ€" tions, asked the children which bones were broken and to steady their bears while a large studio light was switched on and off to simulate the Xâ€"ray being taken. Then the children were shown Xâ€"ray pictures of a broken arm, the chest, and a broken leg.
