Thanks largely due to the increasing popularity of the Windstar, Ford increased its share of the competitive Canadian miniâ€" van market to 32% in the month of August. "The 1995 Windstar has taken the Canadian market by storm since its introduction in March," said Mark Hutchins, Ford of Canada and CEO, at the compaâ€" ny‘s 1995 products news conference in Oakville, Thursday. "In fact, Windstar sales accounted for 13.6% of the minivan market in August and has clearly gotten the attention of our friendly comâ€" petitors (Chrysler) in Windsor." In comparison, Chrysler‘s share of the minivan market in August ‘ A t y Fant} o id Pnd d C o PP 3 w n ue # w w n i un an w w w w w w a a a # dn ie w "Right. now, we‘re selling | everything. was 34% â€" down from 44.5% one year ago, according to Ford spokesman Jon Harmon. During the month of August, Ford sold 1,603 Windstars in Canada for 13.7% of the miniâ€"van market. Aerostar sold 1,520 units for 12.4% of the market while the Villager captured another 7% of the market. The sales represented a 42% increase in Ford Minivans from the previous year. In the past three months, Windstar‘s share of the miniâ€"van market has climbed steadily from just over 10% in June to 11% in July and 13.7% in August, said Harmon. "We were ecstatic when it was over 10%," said Harmon. A similar success story exists south of the border where 90% of the Oakvilleâ€"built Windstars are being shipped. In August, the Ford Windstar captured 16.4% _ of _ the UnitedStates‘ minivan market. . "They are having the same sucâ€" cess rate as we in Canada," said Hutchins. "It‘s been a smash hit in the U.S." While there are no immediate plans to market Windstar globally, Hutchins thought the Windstar would be an ideal product for the world market. Currently, however, the Oakville assembly plant has twoâ€"shifts each working 48 hours a week to meet the North American demand. "Right now, we‘re selling everyâ€" thing we produce," he said . Since its introduction in March, Windstar has sold more than 8,500 units, according to Udo Kaul, Ford of Canada vice president â€" General Sales. The Oakville Assembly plant which began Windstar production on Jan. 24th after switching over from the popular Tempo/Topaz compact sedans is currently proâ€" ducing 67 Windstars an hour. Ford has invested $1.5 billion (U.S.) in the Windstar planning and development. The plant‘s 3,900 hourly and salaried workers underwent 1.3 million hours of training in order to build the vehiâ€" cle. Windstar‘s popularity, coupled with the strong sales performance of the Fâ€"series pickup has manâ€" aged to offset a soft car market for Ford. Barring a complete collapse in the fourth quarter, Hutchins preâ€" dicted Ford of Canada vehicle sales would approach the 1.3 milâ€" lion mark. Ford of Canada‘s combined car and truck share for the 1994 model year is up 1.2 percentage points over a year ago, said Hutchins. "For the calendar year, we‘re up nearly a full point â€" the biggest share gain by any auto company in Canada," he added. For 1995, Hutchins anticipated Ford would grab 22% of the new vehicle market in Canada â€" the company‘s strongest showing since 1989.
