m,. esns al | r f | Oakville resident organizes Rwandan benefit at popular Toronto dance club on Wednesday By KATHY YANCHUS Oakville Beaver Staff Meredoc McMinn is hoping to save lives. A young man with a refined social conscience, who has parâ€" ticipated in charity work before, McMinn has targeted the Rwandan refugees and has undertaken a gargantuan effort to help them in their plight. Singlehandedly, he has orgaâ€" nized a spectacular dance club event entitled the Charity Ball which will get underway Wednesday night at 9 p.m. at Toronto‘s RPM. As a partâ€"time club dj, McMinn, who recently graduatâ€" ed from University College, University of Toronto in Philosphy in International Relations, used his contacts in the music business to build a super lineup of Toronto‘s top club djs including the legendary Deadly Hedley, Matt C., James St. Bass, Scott Cairns, Mitch Winthrop, Kevin Williams and Peter, Tyrone and Shams. "The importance of this event cannot be understated, and 100% of the money raised at the Charity Ball will go to the Red Cross for relief operations," said Oakville‘s McMinn. "The cover charge is only $5 and if 1,000 attend, we can raise $5,000 to save lives." There was no one "inspiraâ€" tional thing" which occured to prompt McMinn‘s actions; chariâ€" ty work has always been close to his heart. He sat on the U of T‘s UNICEF committee for examâ€" ple. Over the summer, as he recuâ€" perated from a knee operation and searched for fulltime work in the dj business, he decided he "wanted to do something instead of waste my time." The djs, who have never worked together before, jumped aboard. It was in marketing the event where McMinn had problems and needâ€" ed all his reserves of perserverâ€" ance and tenacity. "It was a lot of work," admits McMinn, who is still distributâ€" ing flyers. "I‘ve managed a bar before and I‘ve done promotions work before, but this was hard. I guess I was naive. I thought I‘d have an easier time, but that has not been the case." In any event, the Charity Ball is set to go at the Queen‘s Quay East outlet. Tickets are available at the door. "...this event can be an enorâ€" mous success," says McMinn. "Not only will it help those affected by this terrible emerâ€" gency, but raise awareness of their plight and bring out the best in those who attend â€" our generosity and compassion 3 CIRCUS SKILLS ive a chance to children youth the opporâ€" unity to learn the following circus skills: Acrobatics, Bicycle Artistry, Antipod (leg juggling), Juggling, Balance skills, Rollo Board balancing, Clowning, Freeâ€" Standing ladder walking, Equilibristics, Hand balancing, Walking Ball balancing and other skills.
