A fisheries worker for years, he was ready for a career change, wasn‘t married and had no children. The stage was set. "It was timing more than anyâ€" thing," he said, explaining that within a week of hearing about Costa he had his whole trip "stretched out in my mind." Herman, whose experience comes from canoeing on flat and white water, chose the Great Lakes because it draws so many people from all walks of life and locations â€" an ideal audience for his awareness campaign. Although he averaged 30 to 40 km per day, his longest haul was 63 km. "Had I set a schedule like that every day I would have killed myself, would have burnt out," he said. Even so, only 25 days into his odyssey Herman began suffering tendonitis of the wrist. Luck was Herman showing his technique smiling on him, however, when on Manitoulin Island he met Dieter Poenn, a doctor with 10 year‘s experience on the Canadian kayak team, who diagnosed his trouble and adjusted his technique. Weather was a constant chalâ€" lenge, as were the surface condiâ€" tions of the water. The worst occurred on Lake Erie where Herman endured five hours of 20â€" foot swells before finally landing at Long Point beach. "I never wanted to give up," he says. "I never had that feeling once." Although the hospitality he found in small towns along the way was wonderful, there were stretches when Herman relied solely on the campingâ€"equipment and provisions he had on board. Free of mass media and other distractions, Herman learned to appreciate such things as a warm sweater and a hot meal as well as to have faith in what you can achieve. All he hopes now is that this newfound perspective will continue once he‘s back in civilizaâ€" tion. Speaking of which, Herman plans to move to Thunder Bay in October, perhaps write a book about his adventure and maybe even get into the ecoâ€"tourism business.
