JIM MILLINGTON: Actor, businessman and veterinarian Before that, for 20 years, Dr. James Millington was a veterinarian with a practice in Toronto â€" coâ€"inciâ€" dentally just down the street from Alliance Studios, the producers of ENG. Not to put too fine a point on it, the part of Seth Miller in the popular series didn‘t exactly fall into his lap â€" he did have to audition for it â€" still, he has had something of a ‘charmed‘ life. ing. And he does like acting â€" though he has no ‘formal‘ training in the field. For five full actionâ€"packed seaâ€" sons Millington was the anchor man, Seth Miller, on ENG, the entertaining and topical Canadian series set in a Toronto television newsroom and canceled last year. "I am a fairly choleric personaliâ€" ty," he confessed. "I like to just sort of get on my horse and ride." Unlike his wife Diane, he added thankfully, who is quite analytical. ""She‘s one of the best things to hapâ€" pen to me." But back to acting: "Everything that I do is instinctive," the London, Ontario native explained. "I watch other people, and I listen to the director, and the camera man." Well yes, Millington allowed, and he‘s grateful for it, but is also true that he is something of a workaholic. "I think the harder I work, the luckier I get," he said alluding to the wisdom of American folk hero, “l ‘m 51 up,” J ‘m 51, and I still don‘t know what I want to be when I grow up," Jim Millington said candidly in a recent interview. When his marks were not good enough for acceptance into the Ontario Veterinary College at Guelph, he enrolled in Agricultural Science instead, while continuing to lobby the University administrators on a daily basis. As a young fellow he was someâ€" thing of a hellâ€"raiser, investing eight years in high school. Nevertheless, and in spite of his academic under achievement, he was determined to become an animal doctor. "I drove them nuts," declared Millington, who in real life is much more assertive than this TV perâ€" sona. "I bugged them every day. I talked to everybody I could." Finally after two weeks, when one kid hadn‘t shown up for any classes, the persistent young man got the nod. "That only works out in a meanâ€" ingful way when preparation meets opportunity," the actor said, "otherâ€" wise opportunity skates right on by." (Just so.) "And I am stubborn to the point of driving people bananas someâ€" times," he confided. It was at the University of Guelph that the vet caught the perâ€" formance bug. For five years Jim helped to write the annual school revue. He also acted and directed. Later he became involved in amaâ€" teur Little Theatre. So by the time his agent sent him to read for the part of the newscastâ€" er on ENG, preparation and opporâ€" tunity were almost perfectly aligned. "It was an extremely close set," the former Seth Miller said, "we all got along well. We had fun together and commiserated together. From an acting standpoint, it was specialâ€" I think we did good work together. We even got along great with the producers of the series." Earlier this year, our man appeared as the Commissioner of the RCMP in a twoâ€"hour pilot for But is there life after ENG, we wonder? Absolutely. Though he does miss the people in his old ensemble. The actor has few regretsâ€"and none to speak of. The show had run its course, he said philosophically.
