YÂ¥ he rapid expansion of the cruise industry has spawned some fabulous successes and, regrettably, the odd failure. At the end of September, American Family Cruises (AFC) will cease operations â€" a business failure! AFC was created by Bruce Niernberg. He was also the cruise industry executive who successfully developed Premier Cruise Lines and the ‘Official Cruise Line‘ of Walt Disney World theme. His vision was to develop a cruise line that was totally dedicated to providing families a cruise vacaâ€" tion experience of high quality that every age group would enjoy. From all of the feedback we received from our family clients â€" who cruised on AFC â€" Niernberg ......... 5700 ADVERTISING FEATURE on‘t miss an | opportunity to L* join Pud and the rest of the Nease family for the March Break vacation of a lifeâ€" Offered exclusively by x4 B Cruise Holidays in Oakville, p\ the allâ€"inclusive trip consists of four pampered days aboard the ‘Fun Ship Fantasy,‘ and three funâ€"filled days in Floridaâ€"with a rental car so families can create their own mini itinerary. "Cruising is the only way for everyâ€" one in the family to have a ‘real‘ vacaâ€" tion, because your every need is looked after, and there are activities geared to every age range," notes Bob Kerby, owner of Cruise Holidays. Join Pud and the gang for the March Break ‘vacation of a lifetime‘ "It‘s pure escapism; there‘s a psyâ€" chological break that occurs when the ship pulls away from land. People come back much more relaxed and happy." Oakville Beaver cartoonist Steve Nease, creator of the popular Pud comic strip, will bring his family along to share in the fun. In fact, the Neases will host a special shipboard party for their new Oakville friends. A firm believer in the therapeutic benefits of cruising, Kerby had been looking for a way to promote a cruise vacation suitable for families. During a brainstorming session, Cruise Holidays‘ 5049 JOKE OF THE DAY +1. in 5+0 Leave "UPDATE" information ..... Question of the week.............. Speak your mind ........ Regrettably, the product and proâ€" grams on the weekly cruises were totally targeted to families and did not draw passengers from other than the family market. Add up the number of available weeks that families traditionally vacation each year and you may total 16 to 20 weeks. AFC was unsuccessful in filling the other 30 plus weeks resulting in their subseâ€" quent failure. Their passing will be noted and I‘m sure that many of their ideas will be examined by other cruise lines who, currently, offer children‘s programs as part of their regular cruise packages. When approached, Pud‘s ‘dad‘ was enthuâ€" siastic about the idea. "The whole family is just thrilled to be a part of this cruise," Nease says. "Bob and Jim have really done their homework and put together a fabulous package that will be relaxing for adults, exciting for kids, and a lot of fun for everyone. I think they‘ve come up with the perfect family vacation!" Loaded with activities, the trip feaâ€" tures all the elements that make cruises so popular, such as a welcome aboard party, great children‘s and teen proâ€" grams, amazing food (eight great meals and snacks a day, including two lateâ€" night buffets and optional breakfast in bed), and a wide range of entertainment (nightclub shows each night at sea, full casino, pools, nautical spa program, three bands and orchestras, firstâ€"run movies and much more). "We‘ve already had a number of bookings since we began a teaser camâ€" paign in the spring," Kerby says. "We‘re hoping to take more than 50 families the first year, and expand from there." WEATHER (Dept. of Environment) Fortunately, a number of cruise lines have excellent children‘s proâ€" grams run by fullâ€"time counsellors for most age groups (two years and up). Submitted by Bob Kerby, Cruise Holidays, 338â€"2077. One of the best children‘s proâ€" grams available is offered on Carnival‘s ships. The ‘Camp Carnival‘ children‘s program has specially designed proâ€" grams for four age groups. Babyâ€" sitting is also available in the evening for a nominal fee. Younger children‘s programs tend to focus on arts and crafts (finâ€" ger painting, learn your colors, face painting, puzzle time, etc.), and socially friendly activities (let‘s swim, autograph hunt, breakfast with youth staff, story time, etc.). A great opportunity to take a family cruise vacation this coming winter will be with cartoonist Steve Nease and his family on the Oakville Beaver‘s "Pud Family Cruise" next March Break on Carnival‘s Superliner the "Fantasy!" Ship‘s facilities for children include: special centres for each age group, a water slide, and a chilâ€" dren‘s wading pool. Each child receives a ‘Fun Pack‘ of gifts and prizes. The dining room has a speâ€" cial children‘s menu. During the day, ‘Camp Carnival‘ specially trained counsellors run children‘s activities geared to each age group with increasing levels of supervision for younger ages. Intermediate youths and teens programs have more creative activiâ€" ties (talent shows, put out a newspaâ€" per, charades, etc.), and pool and sports activities. Kids settle into the ship‘s routine very quickly and as we found when we took our kids on cruises, we rarely saw them â€" except at dinner time, and even that might be a rushed affair as they wanted to get back to their newâ€"found friends! Ships are totally safe and have secure environments for children. The programs are wellâ€"supervised and offer a variety of activities for all ages. I‘ve always had rave reviews from families who have taken a cruise vacation. .......... 5556 ..... 6005 ....8015 ....5003 5509 5561
