Velebit hopes to play giant killer The Oakville Velebit soccer club is on the verge of making the playoffs in their first year in the Ontario Soccer League‘s premier division. The top four teams in the 10â€" team league make the playoffs, and although Oakville, which plays Saturday night in Peterborough, currently sits in fifth place, they still have three more games left to play (which is more than most of the other challengers) before the season wraps up next weekend. The first of those games â€" on Tuesday night, 8 p.m. at Bronte Athletic Field against Woodbridge â€" could very well turn out to be the highlight of the regular season. After all, the only blemish on Woodbridge‘s perfect record this season has been one tie â€" and Oakville was the team that managed to do it. Spectators are welcome, and admission is free. As Oakville chasâ€" es a playoff spot, the final two games â€" also at home â€" should also be of interest to soccer enthusiasts. On Thursday night, Oakville hosts as the Oakville Blades lace up for their gala home opener on Friday, September 30 at 8 p.m., Oakville Arena, against the Burlington Cougars. A strong midfield of David Clerc, Jeff Potter, Wes DeJonge, Alex Clafton and Richard Monterio was the key to this win. The third game against the Valley Raiders, Pennsylvania team was much tougher with Oakville eking out a 1â€"0 victory. Garry Rai scored the goal on a perfect pass from Mike Perez. Oakville‘s defensive crew of Mark Burnatowski, Tom Watson, Tim Skrins and Tomas Filipuzze were outstanding in shutting down the opposition‘s scoring chances. Oakville decided to move up to the top division this year after a playoff championship in their secâ€" ond tier division last year. The team‘s success is due, in part, to a mixture of veterans and young players who are coming up. Blue skies, sunshine and plenty of support spelled success for the Insurance Brokers‘ Association of Oakville‘s annual golf tournament this year, and organizers are especially pleased to have raised an "exceptional" amount of money for local charities as a result. In all, the event raised a total of $7,200; it has been divided between the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital‘s Equipment Fund and the United Way, and members of the Insurance Brokers Association of Oakville are planning to raise even more money for both causes over the next year or so. Local businesses showed significant support for this year‘s tournament, and special thanks go to all our hole sponsors, and prize donors, for their interest in helping the local brokerage . community raise funds for worthy causes. The event was an "invitation only" opportunity for brokers, representatives of insurance companies and suppliers to the insurance industry to get together on behalf of charity. A total of 120 golfers took part in this year‘s scramble format tournament. _ r Pafinapam’ , N JAINTERE . i % Z TE By Terry Patterson Terry Patterson Agenda items and meeting material will be available at the Minor Hockey Office anytime after Monday, September 26, 1994 cwweeldyfeo?uepronedbyRedEsTo?eSdesReprenfaWeGbrbhgan THE QUARTERLY MEETING OF THE MINOR OAKS HOCKEY ASSOCIATION WILL BE HELD AT THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS HALL 1494 WALLACE ROAD ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1994 AT 10:00 A.M. QUARTERLY MEETING This is the fourth year our association has run a fundâ€"raising golf tournament, and is by no means the only fundâ€"raising we‘ve undertaken: we have raised more than $30,000 for charity in the past for such organizations as the Children‘s Wish Foundation, local scouting and girl guide troupes and Oakville‘s Drive Dry Campaign. We‘re looking forward to serving our community with further donations, and we‘re proud to say we‘re here for the long haul. The donation to the United Way marks the kickâ€"off of the insurance industry‘s 1994 Oakville campaign, and represents the first of a number of fundâ€"raising initiatives local brokers will participate in on behalf of that organization. The Insurance Brokers Association of Oakville has a history of strong support of our community, and we‘re proud to be continuing a tradition that makes us all proud of our Association.
