2 â€" GOOD NEWS THE OAKVILLE BEAVER September 28, 1994 Volunteering at it‘s finest! Help to make Oakville one of the safest places in Canada St. John Ambulance s 466 MORDEN ROAD, Suite 201 Oakville, Ontario L6K 3W4 (905) 844â€"4844, FAX (905) 844â€"0780 WE‘RE PLACING YoU FirstT IN OAKVILLE Dedicated ‘people people‘ at DGS ADVERTISING FEATURE P hen you‘re in the business of placâ€" ing people, you‘ve got to know ’ your stuff. f So says Brenda Higgins, who started the Oakville branch of Canadianâ€"owned DGS Personnel five years ago, in the midst of the recession. "We‘re one of the top branches in our company out of nine in the Toronto area, and the reason is that we‘ve got the most experienced staff in Halton." Higgins, along with colleagues Judi Hanson and Vicki Prosser, brings decades of local experience to the job. They are all activeâ€"with local industryâ€"related concerns: Prosser is on the board of the Federation of Temporary Help Services in Canada; Hanson is plugged into the IAPA; Higgins is on the business and education committee of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce, and an advocate at the WCB; and all are active with the Oakville District Personnel Association. “Our philosophy is teamwork in a big way." The dedicated trio began offering 24â€"hour service to their clients not long after the office opened for business, and they haven‘t looked back. "Until three years ago, we were literally here at 10 o‘clock at night in our PJs. Since then, we‘ve spent a lot of time training our staff to provide this service to our manufacâ€" turing clients," Higgins says. She says the firm‘s additional strengths include the flexibility to respond to workâ€" place changes and employers‘ requests very quickly, and placement candidates are "treated as well as the clients." "When the demand grows for good peoâ€" ple, we‘ll have been treating them well all along." DGS is also making inroads within its own industry, having won a provincial award two years ago for their leadership in basic employment skills training. They are now working to establish a certification proâ€" gram for trades, based on the European model. "We really have a good time, and so do the 200 people we have working in Oakville at this very moment." Hopedale Mall shoppers wanted to see a menswear store and a children‘s clothing store, mall manager Ann Madronic set out to do something about it. By August, JC Menswear had opened, and on Sept. 1, Kathy‘s Collection began offering chilâ€" dren‘s wear for babies on up to age ten. "We‘re very pleased to be meeting the needs of the local market," she says. Madronic is also happy to report that the mall boasts a vacancy rate of zero, and has seen increased activity since the expansion of the Kmart store, and a redesign of the AP store parking lot which offers cusâ€" tomers improved access. The survey revealedsomething else: a sense of community ownâ€" ers. "There was a lot of ownership in the survey. People consider us a community centre, not a regional centre," notes events coâ€" ordinator Lynda Turner. "We really want to meet the needs of the community, and we put on lots of events." You feel it as soon as you walk into the mall. It‘s usually a lively scene where friendly merâ€" chants chat with relaxedâ€"looking customers in an airy, open mall with plenty of benches and large planters. Hopedale Mall is not just home to an interesting mix of large and small retailers, two major banks and small restauâ€" A familyâ€"run success story 12 years‘ handsâ€"on experience, and her present duties include inâ€" home design consultation. Enjoying a burst of "good news," tenants of the Cross Avenue mall have experienced a significant increase in traffic, according to Trafalgar Village manager, Pat Sutcliffe. This is due in part to the 1994 additions of Walâ€"Mart, Garrie and Chris‘ No Frills, Beverly Hills Weight Loss Clinic, Nail Queen and P.A.M.S. Coffee. Not to mention the recent expansion of Oakville Cycle and Sport. Walâ€"Mart is preparing to enjoy their grand opening celeâ€" brations in November. The store has been open since early fall and has also seen a steady flow of customers. Next month, the centre will celebrate its 15th anniversary. The fun begins with a sidewalk sale Oct. 3, which lasts the entire week, until Oct. 8. Enjoy free birthday cake, karaoke and midâ€" night madness Oct. 7th. The Crime Fighting Rangers, will appear in person on Saturday, Oct. 8th, from noon until 4 p.m. On the same day, there will be a free draw, and giveaways throughout the day. Trafalgar Village continues to offer broad appeal, with events such as "The Rangers" for the kids and Senior‘s Days the last Thursday of every month. On Oct. 29, Trafalgar Village will host its annual Bake and Craft Sale, featuring seniors‘ disâ€" counts all day long and many other events and goodies. Originally called Oakville Queen Mall, the centrally located community shopping centre was once two outdoor strip malls facâ€" ing each other. Indeed, the slogan "Look At Us Now" reflects the positive changes in the now fully enclosed mall and a progressive outlook that is sure to include busy, exciting times in 1995.
