| THE OAKVILLE BEAVER _ SPORTS Nogadun To: the ‘ % Y _ thanks to Newfoundlanders Oakville‘s provincial champion underâ€"17 team goes after the national crown next weekend in Etobicoke at Centennial Park. Oddly enough, the Oakville Winstars opening game â€" slated for next Friday at 8 p.m. against Manitoba champion Winnipeg Kilcona â€" has been shunted from the stadium to an adjacent field to make way for the Newfoundland contingent. Organizers are "trying to key Friday night to Newfoundland," explained Ontario Soccer Club spokesperson Robyn McComb. In the past, she explained, the Newfoundland contingent has attracted big support and this "is a way of keeping it going." The other thing is that "all teams have to play at least one game in the stadium." The end result is that opening night this Friday will have a very Newfoundlandish flavor to it with the Newfoundland champion girls team from St. John‘s kicking off at 7 p.m. against Burlington Magic and the Newfoundland champion boys team from St. John‘s kicking off at 9 p.m. against British Columbia champion Vancouver Metro Ford Rangers â€" both in the main stadium, of course. Oakville Winstars, meanwhile, will be in the stadium for their next two games â€" Saturday at 1 p.m. against Nova Scotia champion Dartmouth United Just for Kicks and Sunday at 5 p.m. against Quebec champion F.C. Outaouais. The Burlington girls play Saskatchewan champion Regina Nationals at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Field E) and Alberta champion Edmonton Southwest United Hammers at 3 p.m. on Sunday (stadium). The championship games are scheduled for Thanksgiving Monday. Admission is free now that organizers have scrapped their original plan to charge a $5 admission to stadium games. Instead, they hope to attract as many spectators as possible. Carrying the torch in fine style Of the nine player‘s eligible to return to the Oakville tripleâ€"AAA midget team which won the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) title last year, only one is back in the fold. And he (Ryan Buttaro) is injured. Nevertheless, the tripleâ€"AAA midgets began the season on the most positive note possible as they took the championship home from the Sarnia/Lambton early bird tournament on the weekend. Oakville capped off its fifth straight victory with a 3â€"2 victory over Barrie in the championship game. The scoring was handled by Jeff Wells with a pair and Muldoon with a single marker. Helpers went to Robert Kerr, Adam Richards, Steve MacGibbon, Chris Muldowney, Robert Muldoon and brother Michael Muldoon. Despite the absence of last year‘s midgets, the team has a good blend of two bantams, seven secondâ€"year midgets and eight firstâ€"year (or gradâ€" uating bantam) midgets. In the semiâ€"final game against Whitby, Oakville overcame a 3â€"2 deficit after two periods and blasted in five unanswered goals for a 7â€"3 victory. Steve MacGibbon and Rob Medeiros led the way with a pair of goals while singles went to Rob Kerr, Rob Muldoon and Mike Muldoon. Assists went to Robert Kerr (3), Jeff Wells (2), Adam Richards (2), Bryan Vines (2), R.J. Carr and Chris Muldowney. In preliminary pool play Oakyville defeated Barrie 3â€"2, Middlesex 5â€"3 and London 5â€"2. Oakville opens the season this week with two games on the road â€" Sunday in Guelph and Wednesday in Welland. Next weekend they‘re entered in the Markham Islander Tournament and the home opener, at Oakville Arena (8 p.m. start) is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 12. Not a bad week for Velebit â€" so far Oakville Velebit needed a good week to secure a topâ€"four finish and make 11 W the Ontario Soccer League playoffs â€" and that‘s exactly what they got. The high school sports schedule is well under way. In these games, caught by Beaver photographer Peter A 2â€"0 victory over Guelph Thursday night gave them five out of six McCusker, T.A.
