Sunday, Oct. 16th marks the first time the Oakville Friends of Schizophrenics sponsor a Walk to raise $7,000 for research into a bioâ€" chemical brain disorder affecting 1% of the population. "The Walk isn‘t restricted to chapâ€" ter members," said Bill Pidgeon, presâ€" ident of the Oakville chapter and chairman of the Walk committee. "Anyone who is interested in the cause would be most welcome to join "Although researchers have made great strides with the little funding they‘ve had, there‘s relatively little money directed toward schizophrenia research, compared to other major diseases," he said. "If we work hard enough, perhaps researchers may be able to find the root cause of schizophrenia in our lifetime." The Walk will start at 1:30 p.m. from the Kinsmen Pine Room at the Oakville Arena at Kerr and Rebecca Streets and continue east on Rebecca and Church to Trafalgar, then back to the arena via Lakeshore and Brant â€" a distance of some 1 1/2 miles. Participants in the Walk will register from 1 to 1:30 p.m. and refreshments will be available at the end of the Walk, as well as, a personalized cerâ€" tificate. He said the Walk should also help raise awareness of a brain disease that strikes many Canadians â€" mainly in their late teens or early twenties. Its symptoms include illogical and/or disorganized thinking, feelings of perâ€" secution, hallucinations, inactivity, and apathy. Medications help relieve us. He also stressed the importance of adding to research coffers. Road Safety Bishop John Bothwell, retired Anglican bishop of the Diocese of Niagara and former rector at St. Aidan‘s Church, ‘came home‘ to celebrate a Eucharist of Thanksgiving marking the more than 40 years of St. Aidan‘s parish. The celebration included the dedication of a 2 by 6 ft. canvas by local artist John Dunbar McLean, a parishioner, of the Patron Saint, Aidan of Lindisfarne, with pastor Rev. Nanci Nancekivell. A missionary, Aidan ministered to the Celts of Northumbria during the 7th century. The artist has included the symbols of Aidan‘s work â€" the Torch of Evangelism, the Celtic hills and the Celtic cross, the Bishop‘s staff, and the parting of the curtains of darkness. The painting was donated to the church. It will hang in the narthex.
