By the time the group finished their trek last Wednesday (Oct. 5th), they estimate to have covered between 800 to 1,000 kilometres, "when you add in all side tracking we did along the trail, getâ€" ting around fallen trees, and ï¬nding the narrowest crossings over streams," said Platiel. Officially, the trail is 776 kiloâ€" i( mtres, with 290 kilometres of side trails. TRAINING EXCEL for WINDOWS 338â€"6600 Never too old for the Bruce! Focus Editor By WILMA BLOKHUIS gatha Platiel has discovered the Bruce Trail. At 57, she is the youngest of a dozen hikâ€" ers who have just completed the entire length of the Bruce Trail. The oldest is 73. Their average age is 67. Four of these intrepid hikers are from Oakville, the others hail from Burlington, Mississauga, Hamilton and St. Catharines. Somehow, they came together "and got serious" about hiking the Bruce Trail in the spring of 1993. "It was Kay MacCuloch of Oakville, 73, who said we should hike the whole trail!" said Platiel, who previously may have only taken the odd walk in the park. She was lured into hiking about 1 1/2 years ago by Bill and Roma Browne, 67 and 66, of Oakville, after Roma got her husband interested. _*__ MV [! 220 Wyecroft Road, Oakville, ON L4K 3Y1 25 YOGA CLASSES PER WEEK » TAl CHI +« SELF DEFENCE FOR WOMEN +« MASSAGE THERAPIES « REFLEXOLOGY all WEST END HEATING...Your Authorized Consumers Gas. Platiel found she was not only the youngest in this group, but also the shortest, "and whenever we walked through weeds up to my head, the others joked about having lost Agatha again!" | hh And, "the weather was great!" said Platiel. "But, the hiking was rough along the cliffs in some areas" along the rocky shores of Georgian Bay just south of Tobermory. "We all looked forward to reaching our goal. We have all built such good friendships, and now we‘re wondering what to do next. We need a new project! Hiking the Bruce Trail was worth every step. "We will, however, continue hiking in this area every Thursday." "On my first day of hiking, I saw a lady slipper orchid," recalls Platiel. "We thought they were dandelions. There were just hundreds of them beside the road in the Syndenham section." The trudged over hill and dale, climbed over rocks, hiked through rain, and even during the winter.
