WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1994 PAGE 16 A gritty comeback Home opener loss > Oakville‘s tripleâ€"AAA midget hockey team made it twoâ€"forâ€"two on the year with a gritty, comeâ€"fromâ€"behind 5â€"4 vicâ€" fory in Welland Wednesday night. The Oakville Rangers dropped their home opener 6â€"3 to Orangeville on Saturday in novice doubleâ€"AA Triâ€" County action. * The defending Ontario Minor Kockey Association (OMHA) champiâ€" ons were behind 4â€"2 after two periods. Of Oakville‘s five goals, four of them came from the line of Jeff Wells, Adam Richards and Rob Frankovic. ~_ Richards notched a hatâ€"trick and one assist, Frankovic a goal and three assists and Wells three assists. Also Sneaking in an assist on one of the line‘s goals was defenceman Mike Muldoon. The other goal was scored by Steve MacGibbon from R.J. Carr and Rob Kerr. Oakville jumped into an early 2â€"0 lead only to see Orangeville come back with four straight goals. Oakville cut the margin to 4â€"3 before Orangeville closed out the game with two final markers. _ Scoring for Oakville were Brent Von Hagen, Josh Ranells and Ryan Donnelly. Picking up assists were Blake McLennan, Andrew MacMillan, Glen Hartwell and Drew Wilkinson. The Oakville tripleâ€"AAA novice hockey team gave it a great try but it wasn‘t enough as they lost to the Toronto Marlies 4â€"1 in the finals of the 9th Wonders of the World hockey tourâ€" nament in Niagara Falls, New York over the weekend. David Nugent scored the lone goal on a pass from Scotty Russel part way through the period. Tourney finalists In the semiâ€"final game, Oakville got past the Toronto Red Wings 3â€"1 in anther wellâ€"played game. Josh Smyth scored twice and Steven Donnelly once â€" all unassisted. Winstars have to settle for silver By NORMAN NELSON Beaver Sports Editor Someday, perhaps, members of the Oakville Winstars will come to appreciate the silver medal they earned at the underâ€"17 national club soccer championships held in Etobicoke on the weekend. After Monday‘s championship game, however, they were inconâ€" solable with several players burying their heads deep in the turf as the British Columbia (and now nationâ€" al) champion Vancouver Metro Ford Ranger players raised hands and voices to the sky. They had prevailed over the Ontario champion Oakville team 4â€" 2 in overtime penalty kicks after the two combatants were left deadâ€" locked at 1â€"1 following 90 minutes of regulation time and a half hour of overtime Both teams hit their first two penalty boots but missed on their third try. British Columbia hit their fourth shot; Oakville didn‘t. British Columbia then put it out of reach when Jeffrey Clarke, who had earlier potted the equalizer for British Columbia, hit the mark again. Heartbreaking for Oakville fans, for sure. Consider that British Columbia‘s fifth shot hit the post before going in. And that their secâ€" ond shot was partially blocked by Oakville goaltender David Clemente but still managed to catch a piece of the net. Oakville opened the scoring in regulation time on a goal by Claudio Facchini four minutes from half time. Oakville appeared to be up to the challenge of holding off an exploâ€" sive British Columbia team when disaster struck early in the second half with the referee issuing red cards that forced Oakville‘s Nick Knez and Jason Matyczuk to an early shower. British Columbia quickly took control of the game, and evened things up on Clarke‘s marker at the oneâ€"hour mark. Oakville managed to prevent any "~SPORTS In overtime, the pressure on Oakville eased somewhat at the halfway mark when a British Columbia player was red carded. Oakville coach Charlie Sciberras praised his troops for playing "their hearts out for 60 minutes, two men short" and for rallying together despite some key injuries. In particular, Anthony Shaw, who picked up a league MVP last year, was unable to suit up because of an ankle injury in the final preâ€" liminary pool game against Quebec He was soon joined by Paolo Dipietranonio who twisted an ankle early on in the championship game to go along with an injury to his One of the healthy players rising to the occasion was Goran Yabar, who received the nod as same MVP. Oakville got to the final by defeating Manitoba champion Winnipeg Kilcona Strikers 6â€"1 on Friday night (Oakville goals to Andy Medeiros 3, Goran Yabar, Claudio Facchini and Anthony Shaw; Winnipeg scored their goal on a penalty shot); Nova Scotia champion Dartmouth United Just for Kicks 4â€"0 on Saturday (Andy Medeiros, Alan Hume, Claudio Facchini and Shawn Faria); and Quebec champion F.C. L‘Outaouais 1â€"0 on Sunday (Andy Medeiros). Andy Medeiros received the nod as Oakville‘s tournament MVP. 2'2 This Week We‘ll Be Having ?'2 A "Mystery Puck Giveaway...
