After holding a three hour lecture and demonstration, Jeske sends his students home with a cassette of pop music. "Every pop musician learns by listening and imitating." Jeske started playing the piano when he was sixâ€"yearsâ€"old, but he hated the traditional piano lessons, and when he was 12â€"yearsâ€"old, he refused to go to any more lessons. Although he got back into music as a teenager and went on to study music at York University, Jeske became really curiâ€" ous when he first learned of the Laughlin method through a trade magâ€" azine. When the training package arrived in the mail, Jeske immediately thought Laughlin‘s method was amazing. Despite his enthusiasm, Jeske, who is the only person in Canada teaching the Robert Laughlin method, said peoâ€" ple were very skeptical when they first heard of his method. "When I started teaching the workâ€" shops two years ago, it was really hard to find any college that would run them," he says. But Jeske says the method soon drew a lot of interest and he has already scheduled 30 workshops for this fall. Jeske teaches a wide variety of stuâ€" dents, some of them have only had a few months of formal lessons, others have had years of training. Last spring, he taught a retired trumpet player from the Toronto Symphony. Whatever their musical backâ€" ground, Jeske says all of his students can easily learn to play within three hours. Although he plans to offer more advanced courses next year, Jeske says students who wish only need to take the preliminary workâ€" shop.
