18 October 19, 1994 o room in the garden, no time or energy to dig up the whole place to plant bulbs but I would like a good show if it was not so much trouâ€" ble! Solve both space and time limits by concentrating bulbs in a small area by layer planting. This will produce a monthâ€"long bright spot in the garden for litâ€" tle effort. Start with say, a fourâ€"andâ€" halfâ€"foot square area. Divide it into nine squares. Plot it on a sheet of paper in top and side views. The top view will show the location of the bulbs and the side view will show the depth. Plant the eight squares around the outside, one square purple, one yellow, and so on, with the bulbs about three inches apart. In the centre square plant 25 white crocuses. All the crocuses will be planted five inches deep. This will be the first bloom showing in March or early April. Yellow and blue dwarf iris could be used in place of the purple and yellow crocus with white croâ€" cus, puschkinia or yellow dwarf narcissus in the centre. A second show for late April or early May could be Golden Oxford tulips or other Darwin hybrid with a border of muscari. The tulips would be planted ten to twelve inches deep in sandy soil or eight to ten inches in clay. They are planted six inchâ€" es apart in a three and a half foot square. The muscari are four inches deep, three inches se apart in two rows around the s s oo outside. Different colors of Darwin tulips could be planted in a pattern like the crocus for a CREATE AN EVERGREEN GARDEN AT YOUR HOME OR OFFICE WITH FANTASTIC SELEGCTION $:] OF SILK TREES, PLANTS AND FLOWERS WHICH NEED NO MAINTENANCE > SPACE AGE SHELVING P y {4/%%, ’/’rv% : 0 U umss SALE PR [ $112 50 (with basket system) VIMNEHG J s ETE 3 s If You Present This A Oct. 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 LOOK FOR INâ€"STORE SPECIALS 6‘ ISCUS ON P orr 24" FLOOR 4 1/2" MINI s REGULARPRICES REAL WOOD PLANT FICUS TREE ;SALE IN EFFECT TO 23® _ SALE 3999 SALE 999 SALE 2999 «Phacelinmacu‘a T Oakville 338â€"6960 447 Speers Rd. The idea is to plant staggered layers in the ground so that each bulb has direct access to the surâ€" face. Lay all the bulbs on the surâ€" face, spaced as in the plan and plant them individually at their depth. Another method is to use strings across the bed over a trench about two and half feet wide and a foot deep. Set the tulips in the trench and fill in two inches of soil. Plant a secâ€" ond layer of tulips between the lower plantings marking thepâ€" lanting spots in the row on the string. Fill the trench, planting the bulbs as you go. When this is filled plant the second half of the bed in the same way. Water the plot. Treat these plantings as experiments to start. Nervous gardeners may like to start with a smaller plot. Get the children involved in the design to provide them with the anticipation of spring. The flowâ€" ering of this area will be memoâ€" rable even if it does not come up exactly as planned. Most nurseries have planting depth charts and bloom time informaâ€" tion on the bulb boxes. The area may be planted with annuals between the fading foliage of the bulbs or the bulbs removed and planted in rows down the back. I leave them and accept the yellow foliage for a week or two until the annuals hide it. This show will repeat each year to be celebrated by the family each spring, so it is worth a little planning and planting effort. With no baseball or hockey everyone can particiâ€" pate. Protect the planted area from squirrels with some chickâ€" en wire or other cover until the bulbs start to show. Let the ground freeze before mulching. The leaves are beginning to fall and our annual chance to use them for mulch is here. They will be more efficient temâ€" perature controllers and allow air to the soil if they are broken up. The lawn mower will do this and bag them at the same time. After the ground is frozen they are placed over bulb plantings, under evergreens, on the rose garden between the hills, around perennials and over the trench containing the pots of bulbs for forcing. The aim is to prevent heaving due to freezing and thawing of the soil. The mulch will liven up the spring as the birds will root through it looking for the worms who are taking the leaves into their holes. The birds also use the chopped leaves for nest building. Pile some leaves in the corner or put them in compost piles: These are useful to mix with lawn clippings and kitchen waste next summer to make compost for use during the sumâ€" mer and fall. The mix allows good aeration and a rapid breakâ€". down. When the lawn is cut, sufficient grass clippings mixed 50/50 with chopped leaves in a rotary composter will break down in a few weeks if mixed daily. Royal Botanical Gardens events The construction in the Royal Botanical Garden Centre is complete. The new restaurant under the curved glass roof has a wonderful view of the entrance garden. It is a ful menu restaurant open for lunch es and dinners. There is nd entrance fee to visit the Centre. A survey of forsythia las spring at the R.B.G. showed twd generally available varieties ‘Beatrix Farrand,‘ an d ‘Northern Gold‘ were no harmed by the winter. Other flowered only below the snow line. October is Power Smart Month s the thermometer plunges, and thoughts A turn from cooling to heating, the average Ontario household can reduce its yearly Hydro bill by as much as 30 per cent by becoming a POWER SMART household. The benefits of energy efficiency are twofold, saving every customer money, and reducing each home‘s impact on the environment. These twin conâ€" cerns recently prompted Ontario Hydro to join Power Smart Inc., a Vancouverâ€"based consortium comprised of utilities and energy organizations. Its aim is to integrate the efforts of utilities, manufacâ€" turers, retailers and government agencies to jointly promote the smart use of energy throughout Canada. In his praise for the decision, Prime Minister Jean Chretien said, "While all Canadians recognize that electricity enhances our quality of life, it is out duty to ensure that the earth remains viable and healthy for future genierations." And soon, consumers can do their part. This fall, local retailers across the province will again be THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 0 a 6 e a o 0 o e o e e e 6 e e e e MICHS‘ CONSTRUCTION Home Improvement Specialists * RENOVATIONS * REC.
