More girls than boys attempt suicide (Continued from page 1) attempted suicides over the past two years â€" 38 in 1993 and 47 in 1992. However, these statistics can give the wrong impression since some individuals were admitted more than once. The above admissions were created by 30 young people last year and 44 the year before. Based on the hospital records, females seem more prone to attemptâ€" ing suicide. In the past two years, 66 females were admitted to the hospital following suicide attempts, while only 19 males were admitted. Most (68) were the result of selfâ€" inflicted poisoning by "solid or liqâ€" uid substances and another 11 of them came from slashing themâ€" selves. These hospital statistics tend to reflect the findings of a suicide study of the general population which found that three times as many Halton males killed themselves (101) as Halton females (32) between 1986 and 1990, although twice as many women as men attempted suicide. So, while women try to kill themâ€" selves more often, men are more successful at it. Indeed, it was a male teen who became the only reported suicide in Halton over the past three years. Halton police records show a total of 16 attempts, seven threats and one suicide for this period. In 1992, three teens attempted suicide and one threatened to do so. In the following year, one male succeeded in ending his life by stepping in front of a train, but there were14 attempts and six threats listed. So far this year, Six teens tried to kill themâ€" selves. Their methods included takâ€" ing pills, tryâ€" ing or threatâ€" ening to use a knife or razor, jumpâ€" ing in the lake or threatâ€" ening to jump off a bridge. One young woman called police to say she would kill herself. to Dr. Jan Fleming at the Centre for Studies of Children at Risk in Hamilton, the teen suicide rate in Canada surged dramatically between 1960 and 1986. In 1960 it stood at 3.3 per 100,000. In 1986 it had risen to 12.5 and has since remained about the same. She said all provinces probaâ€" bly followed the same trend. Since suicide is not an indictable offense under the law, investigating police can only try to convince the person to be assessed by a doctor. "We‘re doing studies on it now, but it seems to have something to do with how they look at themselves, They‘re expected to be modelâ€"slim, for instance. Boys don‘t have that problem." While academic expectations could be a contributing factor to the stress level, it is seldom the only one, said Barbara Singleton, principal of White Oaks High School. "I know that academic expectaâ€" tions are not a solitary signal, although, piled on others, it may be the one that broke the camel‘s back, so to speak," she said. Although Fleming noted depresâ€" sion is a major factor in teen suicide, she said it‘s not the only factor. Her studies have shown that drugs and alcohol, divorce, breakups with girlâ€" friends or boyfriends and their own impulsive natures can set the scene for suicide. And she explained one of the reaâ€" sons girls make far more attempts than boys. they have the grounds under the Mental Health Act, police can arrest the person, but only if they see someâ€" one "acting in a disorderly manner" and attempting to cause bodily harm to himself or herself. "It‘s not a charge," said Det. Sgt. Peter Hodgson of the Halton Police Services. "It‘s just to get them to a hospital and we‘re usually successful in convincing people to get an assessment." "In the old days, kids could get into university if their parents had the money," she said. "Now they often have the money, but they can‘t get in without really high marks. I know of a student with a 92% average who can‘t get into university." Why? Probably because there are so many other students with marks as high or higher applying to the same faculty. Pearl Wolfe, Executiveâ€"Director of the Halton branch of the CMHA, said that, while teens don‘t succeed in killing themselves as often as those in other age groups, they try it far more often. It‘s a trend she calls "very worrisome" and "a very seriâ€" ous risk factor" because those who eventually succeed have usually made several previously unsuccessâ€" ful attempts. Why do teens get so despondent they think suicide is the only way out? Corrie Galloway of Halton‘s Children‘s Aid Society suggested a major cause could be stress put on teens to get "unrealistically high" marks at school and trying to do so within a shaky home environment that includes parents dealing with their own marital and monitary presâ€" sures.
