The red wines of Germany don‘t fare as well, at least, not as far as export is concerned. From time to time, we have been able to find the odd bottle of Pinot Noir from the Nahe Region or occasionally the Lemberger, Trollinger, and a few Burgundy varieties from the Wuerttemberg Region. As far as our palates are concerned, those wines, although often outstanding in fruit and extract, simply lack in body to accompany our foods. In order to compete in the red wine market â€" especially within the EEC â€" the common market of Europe, much research was devotâ€" ed to the development of the red Dornfelder a few years back. This was successful in regards to the internal market, but still not a great success in countries which are used to the outstanding Cabernets from Chile, California, Italy, and France. The problem with German wines was, and still is in my opinâ€" ion, too many regulations, too much red tape, and most of all, the tradition which governs almost everything over there. Of course, tradition is a great and desirable thing, but it brings in very little money as far as wine exports are concerned. Schloss Oehringen, Germany. . . The wines of Germany have always been traditionally clean, fruity, and depending on the region, more or less dry. The whites have been mostly Rieslings, some Muellerâ€"Thurgau, a few Silvaner, or my favorite, the Gewuerztraminers and the very nice and wellâ€"balanced Weiss and Grau Burgunders of the Baden Region to the south. Of course, the Pinot.Blanc and Pinot Gris wines of Baden are usually consumed at home, but they are becoming increasingly available here in Canada, if not in regular stores, at least at Vintages. Rules and regulations simply stated that this was not a traditional German variâ€" ety and the growing of it would not be permitted. But the winemakers of Germany are now a new breed. Well educated, travelling all around the world, unlike their ancestors, they have taken on a new outlook, much more cosâ€" mopolitan and international as far as the style of wine is concerned. EBERSPAECHER Such perseverance has resulted in the possibility of growing Chardonnay in some regions now; perhaps a little late. as in my opinâ€" ion, the Chardonnay hayâ€"days have passed. Nevertheless, I will cateâ€" gorically state that the best Chardonnay I drank at Interwein, the international wine fair in Frankfurt, was a Chardonnay that came out of the organic vineyards from a large island in the Rheingau. It was simply an outâ€" standing wine. I am still thinking about this wine, as I am tasting red wines in Oehringen â€" a small town in Wuerttemberg â€" the southern growâ€" ing part of Germany. Here, too, rebellion has entered the traditional German wine scene. Of course, the estate belonging to the Fuerst zu Hohenloneâ€"Oehringen, offers the dry _ white wines _ from Wuerttemberg, but they have also the greatest variety of great red wines I found in Germany. Fermented and aged in oak, outâ€" standing Lembergers and Pinot Noirs amaze me to no end. I have never thought that such wines could be produced in Germany, nor could I believe that I would ever taste blends, such as the Bordeauxâ€" style wines, which are definitely unusual for this region. At long last, there are now German red wines which can stand side by side with some of the best red wines. Finally, they care what we would like to drink, instead of telling us what we should like.
