Appleby College, seen here against Queen Elizabeth Park during the Halton high school championship game last Wednesday, begin their quest for a provincial championship on Thursday as they open up preliminary pool play in Kingston. (Photo by Peter McCusker) Appleby wins berth in provincials By NORMAN NELSON Beaver Sports Editor It‘s time to register for Oakville‘s two minor baseball leagues Batter up! Well, not to the plate, but cerâ€" tainly to register. The trophy case is piling up this year for the Appleby College senior girls field hockey team, but this week they‘re in for their toughest test yet as they play in their first ever provincial champiâ€" onship. While we don‘t know if the Toronto Blue Jays and the rest of the Major League Baseball will suit up next season, the two Oakville minor baseball leagues are definiteâ€" ‘ly in business for next season and The 16â€"team tournament kicks off Thursday in Kingston. Appleby plays Waterlooâ€"Oxford District High School at 10:30 a.m. and fourth ranked Ridley College at 1:45 p.m. On Friday, their final prelimiâ€" nary pool game is against T.A. Stewart Secondary School at 9 a.m. For their first visit to the provinâ€" cial championships, Appleby is carâ€" rying modest goals â€" to finish in in the top two of their pool, thereby advance to the quarterâ€"finals. While they don‘t know a whole lot about the opposition, the one thing they do know is that they can beat fourthâ€"seeded Ridley. Appleby did it on the weekend with a 1â€"0 regulation time victory to win the annual championship of At Woodcraft we‘ve been carrying furniture that doesn‘t need polishing for over 10 years...in fact it never needs polishing, OPEN SUNDAY ( The Bam: Workshop Showroom: Markham Rd. While coach Catherine Raaflaub was more than happy to get the banner to hang in the gym, she said the annual clash, which they won for the third straight year, is "more of a fun tournament." The provincial championships, on the other hand, are the culminaâ€" tion of the season and carry with it a lot more pressure, she said. The real highlight from that tournament, she said, was the semiâ€"final game against Lakefield. "Lakefield outplayed us during the game, but we were fortunate to win 3â€"0 in flicks," she said. In the preliminary games Appleby tied Holy Trinity 0â€"0 and defeated Havergal College(who are also bound for the provincial championships) 1â€"0. both are getting a jump on things by holding their earliest ever registraâ€" tion. Appleby made it to the provinâ€" cials with a nailbiting, overtime flickâ€"off victory against Barton Secondary School of Hamilton in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (Gâ€"HAC) champiâ€" onship on Friday at Sherwood Forest Park in Burlington. Oakville Little League, which last year had about 1,200 players on 80 teams, held its first registration last Saturday and its second and final registration will be held this Saturday (November 5) at White Unbeatable prices! 50 styles including sofa beds available in over 300 fabrics "I think we outplayed them in W â€" "' .-v, \iï¬ : 86'/LI/)€IOA}(§\:PM) j % D aPTOEN 1074 ~SPORTS SOLID OAK PINE CRAFTSMENSNCE 1974 regulation time â€" but that doesn‘t matter," said Raaflaub. Fortunately, she said, Appleby â€" unlike Lakefield â€" was still able to prevail in the end, winning 3â€"0 in overtime flickâ€"offs. Two days earlier, in the Halton high school championship, Appleby easily knocked off the defending champion Queen Elizabeth Park School, also of Oakville, 2â€"0. Appleby‘s fairy tale year up to this point has quite a cast of charâ€" acters. For instance, there‘s Courtney Billing. Sure, she‘s got plenty of experience donning the pads in ice hockey. But who would have thought the transition to field hockâ€" ey would be so smooth. In the seven regular league games she allowed but one goal (while the offence nabbed 29), and in the playâ€"offs she has been all but perâ€" fect as Appleby defeated Assumption 1â€"0 in the Halton quarterâ€"finals, Bishop Reding 2â€"0 in the Halton semiâ€"finals, Q.E. Park 2â€"0 in the Halton final and Barton High School 1â€"0 in the Gâ€" Oaks Secondary School, .9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Oakville Minor Baseball Association (OMBA), which last year had 2,300 players on 175 teams, will hold its registration the following two Saturdays â€" November 12 and 19, 9 to 4 p.m., at T.A. Blakelock. p OPEN SUNDAY OPEN SUNDAY Mississauga: Whitby: 2185 Dundas St. W. Of course, we insisted on the same quality in construcâ€" tion and style. It‘s paid off for us â€" it‘ll pay off for you. And, of course, she had all zeros in the four games last weekâ€" end as Appleby won the indepenâ€" dent schools provincial champiâ€" onship. And then there‘s Fiona Duthie, the cagey fourthâ€"year veteran who is just about to call it a high school career. "If she was not there (on the field), it would make be nervous," said Raaflaub. And then there‘s Victoria Smart, the brilliant new rookie. Although a Grade Nine student and battling players years older, she leads the team in scoring with seven. How can she do that? "She‘s incredibly quick," said Raaflaub. "She anticipates where the ball will be. She always at the right place at the right time." Anthea Williams, on the other hand, gets the job done with a lot of finesse. The Grade 10, student who is a member of the provincial underâ€"16 team, has scored six goals. Another Grade 10 student prominent in the offence, she said, is Liz Fox. Officials from the two leagues both stressed that registration is on a firstâ€"come, first served basis and that it is important to register early in order to avoid waiting lists. The early registration means the leagues will be able to get all of the paperwork and most of the organizaâ€" tion work out of the way before the FIELD HOGKEY SENIOR QUARTERâ€"FINAL Wednesday, October 19: Appleby 1, Assumption 0 Pearson 1, Notre Dame 0 Thursday, October 20: Bishop Reding 1, St.T.Aquinas 0 Q.E.
