Lum‘s work emotionally intense By DIANE HART Special to the Oakville Beaver In Vancouver artist Ken Lum, there is much to be seen in his illuâ€" mination of the banal. As Brock University professor Derek Knight noted recently at an art lecture for Oakville Galleries, this West Coast artist isn‘t at all interested in showing us the tradiâ€" tional views of Vancouver. There are no Emily Carrâ€"like lush brushstrokes of forests, no pleasing portraits of important peoâ€" ple, no pictures of an idyllic pictureâ€" postcard West Coast. Not at all in fact we don‘t even see any of the traditional established parts of Vancouver that we have come to know over the years. Lum is, as Knight said, not at all interestâ€" ed in the establishment. Instead, we are treated to unsetâ€" tling, rather stark photographs of everyday cruises by everyday peoâ€" ple. In such a way, as Knight says, Lum knows the "value of didactic art in elevating the drama of everyâ€" day life." As the literature from the galâ€" leries says . . . "photographs of banal but poignant moments from daily life, moments of personal criâ€" sis accompanied by texts which reveal the character‘s innermost feelings and thoughts . . ." Lum, a student of Jeff Wall, focuses in on the street life of Vancouver‘s east side with photos of people transfixed in daily dramas with harsh text accompanying it. Where is he . . . where is that kid of mine? Knight noted that Lum is like other Vancouver artists interested in depicting all that is everyday. From his early days as an artist keen on exposing the influence of mass media in society with his riveting language paintings and logo porâ€" traits Lum has moved into more emotionally intense work. Knight mentioned his latest work at Centennial Gallery is much like Barbara Kruger‘s picture readings. But the Kruger work is far more unsettling and far more insistent on personal involvement than is the Lum work. Although it is true the Lum work is difficult to enjoy â€" it‘s much like eavesdropping on a disturbing conâ€" versation â€" it hasn‘t the same involvement as Kruger. For instance, with Kruger, there is a Art Rental fall viewing Oakville Galleries Volunteer Association presents its Art Rental Sales Fall Collection this month at Gairloch Gallery, 1306 Lakeshore Rd. It‘s like the furtive enjoyment of a newspaper story of a personal tragedy; you know you shouldn‘t be enjoying this story but you don‘t miss a word. Kruger insists on that involveâ€" ment and makes your squirm when you read her accompanying test. But Lum, as unsettling as it is, hasn‘t quite the same level of implicitness, of involvement. To Knight, Lum juxtaposes image with text to elevate the banal to art. "The impact of the work lies with the text," said Knight. "You are constantly wondering just what is going on, What are the dynamics at work?" "It is extremely effective," he added.
