Stated the magazine: "Bailey‘s year can best be described as extraordinary simply because he virtually shot from being a journeyman sprinter to joining the top ten elite sprinters in the world in one season. This meteoric rise did not go unnoâ€" ticed by the track world, and the rumors that surround such rapid improvement centred on Bailey for much of the outâ€" door season. Bailey‘s best time prior to this year was a 10.36 seconds for the 100m. That changed dramatically, starting with a windâ€"aided 10.25s in Austin, Texas in April and plummeted to 10.03s in Duisburg, Germany in May. The magazine alludes to the controâ€" versy concerning the selection of Montreal‘s Bruny Surin over Bailey for the Commonwealth Games 100m and conjectures that he may have very well grabbed a medal in the games final had he run. Bailey, a member of Oakville‘s Athletiques International Track and Field Club, left for Louisiana October 29 to begin training for the world indoor chamâ€" pionships in Barcelona in March. But a series of testing occasions, many of which Bailey requested himself, showed that his improvement came from natural sources, and not a needle. The magazine also raises the possibiliâ€" ty that he might have been the first Canadian to break the 10â€"second barrier without drugs, the equivelent, the magaâ€" zine says, of breaking the fourâ€"minute Midgets salvage a tie Steve MacGibbon fired in the equalâ€" izer late in the third period as the Oakville tripleâ€"AAA midget hockey team salvaged a 1â€"1 tie with Sault Ste Marie Friday morning in the first game of a tournament in Sudbury. The Anixter/Hopedale Mall Rangers, who have been piling up some big numâ€" bers in their local tripleâ€"AAA league, suited up against the Toronto Red Wings Friday afternoon and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on Saturday morning. The game MVP went to goaltender Peter Wishloff. Assisting on the goal were R.J. Carr and Robert Kerr. COFHFEEF BREAK Oakville players were prominent in the scoring as Canada‘s national underâ€"17 soccer team downed Nicaragua 10â€"0 Wednesday night in El Salvador before 26,000 fans. The team has five local players â€" three from the Ontario provincial champion underâ€"16 Oakville Blue Devils (Danny â€" Gallagher, Paul Hayward and Eddie McMillan) and two from the Ontario champion and national finalist underâ€"17 Oakville Blue Devils (Dave Clemente and Paolo Depietrantonio). Other goal scorers were Jahmo Welch with the hatâ€"trick and Danley Johnson and Roberto Sorella each with a Canada, which played Jamaica on Friday, completes its fourâ€"team preliminary pool play on Sunday with a game against host El Salvador. Paul Hayward picked up two goals and Eddie McMillan one to pace Canada to its first victory in the allâ€"important 12â€" team tournament which will determine which three teams go on to next year‘s underâ€"17 world championship. Gymnast at world championships It‘s the beginning of a twoâ€"year journey that he hopes will end with a trip to Atlanta for the 1996 Olympic Games. The key juncture of that twoâ€"year journey will actually be at next year‘s world championships where a topâ€"12 finish will automatically qualify the Canadian team for the Atlanta Olympics. The Burlington club attracts many of the top gymnasts in the country, and Arnold said he wouldn‘t be surprised if a good many of them end up on the Canadian team next year. CATHARINES 5, OAKVILLE 2 (Oct. 29, home): The National Cellular Rangers, once again, held the margin of play but penalties took their toll on the home side. Trailing 2â€"0, the Rangers got someâ€" thing going in the third period on a goal by Matt McChesney from Paul Bolta and Dustin Stacey. Bolta tied the game on a power play goal with just under ten minutes to play with assists going to Adam Hockaday and Michael Hamel. Unfortunately, the visitors went ahead to stay with a goal three minutes later and iced the affair with two power play goals within 23 seconds of each other. ANCASTER 3, OAKVILLE 1 (Oct. 30, away): Despite outplaying Ancaster in the first period, the Rangers found themselves trailing 1â€"0 at the end of the first frame. However, Jory Meisner, with his first of the season from Jess Robertson and Chris Varteressian, tied tnings up early in the second. Ancaster unloaded a barrage of shots on Oakville netminder Robbie Benson and managed but one goal, which turned out to be the winner with just under three minutes left in the second period. A third period power play goal by the home side with four minutes left in the contest, put the game out of reach for National Cellular, which saw its record on the season drop to 3â€"6. ATOM DOUBLEâ€"AA You sort of get the feeling that once the McDonald‘s Rangers get their first win of the season, many will follow. Last week saw the Rangers squeeze one point in a 2â€"2 tie in Chingacousy on goals by Mike Whitford and Dave Manacci. On Saturday evening, the Rangers took on the small but fast skating Georgetown Raiders. The game was held at the old Memorial Arena in downtown Georgetown. The Rangers lost the game on a score 2â€"0, but the score would have been much higher withâ€" out Nick Ball‘s outstanding goal tending. The Rangers travel to Brampton Friday, still in search of that first win. MINOR NOVICE DOUBLEâ€"AA The Scotiabank Minor Novice AA are now 8â€"1 and in 1st place in their Triâ€"County League. OAKVILLE 5, BURLINGTON 2 (Oct. 26): Oakville played at home against their across town rivals, Burlington. Some nice passing created lots of scoring opportunities, with Oakville totally dominating the play. Justin Donati had a hat trick and a single assist. Kerry Barchan and Tyler Donati notched the other goals. Assists were contributed by Michael Ward (2), David Dobrinsky, and Corey Halyk. Defensemen chipping in assists were Geoff Pearce (2), Andy MacDonald, and Matthew Fehler. OAKVILLE 4, ANCASTER 1 (Oct. 29): Playing for first place, Oakville had their work cut out for them against Ancaster. Having lost to Ancaster in their home opener, the 6â€"1 Scotia Bank Rangers desperâ€" ately needed a win to climb into first place. Playing their best game of the year, with solid defense and excellent passing, the Rangers were able to dominate the play and score several goals before Ancaster scored their only goal. Strong goal tending came from Jonathan Allen and Tim Pethick, both blocking numerâ€" ous blasts from Ancaster. Goals were scored by Jordy McMillan, Daniel Rodrigues, Jeff Nabeta, David Dobrinsky. Assists were contributed by Corey Halyk (2), Mark Mcissac, David Dobrinsky, and Rodrigues. Defensemen contributing with assists were Geoff Pearce, Tyler Donati, and James Albrecht. OAKVILLE 5, ORANGEVILLE 3 (Oct. 30): Oakville knew that a physical game is what Orangeville would deliver and a strong team effort would be needed to overcome the larger Orangeville team. It was a physical and hard fought game with exciting action at both ends. Oakville scored first. And although never relinquishing the lead, Oakville was never able to gain a comfortable margin. Kerry Barchan had a hat trick and a single assist. Other goal scores were Justin Donah and Jeff Nabeta. Single assists went to Michael Ward, Danie! Rodrigues and Justin Donati. Defensemen helping with assists were Matthew Lee, Andy MacDonald, Geoff Pearce and Tyler Donati. PEEWEE DOUBLEâ€"AA CHINGUACOUSY 5, OAKVILLE 3 (Nov. 1, away) Quaker State Quality 260 Speers Road
