The two candidates vying for the Ward 4 local council seat have something in common: both incumâ€" bent Mark Brown and challenger Jim Stock have an involvement with the Glen Abbey Residents Association. From there comes their Busing splits two vying for seat One area the two candidates agree upon is the potential cost savings that could be achieved through closer cooperation between the separate and public school boards. While Natale believes this area needs exploration, MciIntyre is enthusiastic about the potential savings. This battle is between two men with GARA roots One of the main differences between Ward 4 incumbent Halton Roman Catholic Separate School Board trustee Bryan Mcintyre and challenger Maggie Jessup Natale is their views on busing. _ McIntrye, 40, who is completing his first term on the separate school board, believes improvements are needed â€" especially to shorten the distances ‘younger students should be required to walk to school. Natale believes the board‘s priorities should be in the classroom where chilâ€" dren should be receiving the quality education taxpayers expect for their money. Natale believes fiscal responsibility can be attained by weaving a careful path between essential and nonâ€"essential services. Natale, however, believes the separate school board‘s $5.5â€"million transâ€" portation budget is too high, and believes that while some students require busâ€" ing, others could either walk or be driven by parents or caregivers or use a pubâ€" lic transit. The 35â€"yearâ€"old mother of three believes savings from lower transâ€" portation costs could be passed onto the classrooms. He points to a pilot project the separate school board is working on for next year. The project has identified 32 areas where the two boards can share resources â€" ranging from busing to books, from athletic coâ€"ordinators to administration purchases. I believe we can teach both educations and use joint facilities." _ Bell countered by saying school boards that have tried yearâ€"round schooling â€" the same number of days stretched over the entire year with more frequent breaks â€" have not been impressed. On the issue of year round schooling, Siebert spoke about its benefits, includâ€" ing yearâ€"round use of facilities and aiding students with learning disabilities. _ "The whole question of yearâ€"round schooling came out of this movement to try and save money." _ Siebert advocates ongoing restraint over lastâ€"minute costâ€"cutting. "I believe that steady, realistic pressure is more effective than lastâ€"minute costâ€"cutting," she says. _ Siebert has an extensive background in the financial field, was involved in the parentâ€"teacher organization, and held positions in coâ€"op nursery schools. Bell, a viceâ€"principal with the Peel Board of Education, chairs the Schools and Churches Committee of the Glen Abbey Residents Association, and on GARA‘s behalf, convinced Town Council to maintain a designated secondary school site in Glen Abbey.
