The fledgling club may have limited ice time and equipment, but already they‘re testing their mettle on the provincial scene by participating in Ontario Speed Skating Association meets. Short track speed skating has taken the world by storm lately with excmng action in the last two winter Olympics. (Photo by Riziero Vertolli) The Bears win North Oakville touch football title The Bears, which finished the regular season atop the east division of the North Oakville Mens Touch Football Association, wrapped up the playoff championship Saturday with a 25â€"20 win over the Hornets. The Hornets, fittingly, had finâ€" ished the season in second place in the east division, behind the Bears. Both teams continued their winâ€" ning ways in the play offs. In the semiâ€"finals it was the Bears over the Ghosts 18â€"13 and the Hornets over the Knights 25â€"1. In the quarterâ€" finals, it was the Bears over the Eagles 45â€"7 and the Hornets over the Hawks 13â€"12. Third quarter: early in the third quarter, Guy Girard of the Hornets intercepted a Walker pass again on his own 30â€"yard line. After just three more plays, Dan Fantin of the Hornets scored on a 45â€"yard pass and run combination from Scott to put Bears up 18â€"12 (the single point conversion was missed). The key series of the game started with the Bears in possession on their own 30â€"yard line. With a series of nine short passes, Tom Walker moved the Bears to the Hornets 14â€" In the two weeks prior to the meet, 12â€"yearâ€"old Matthew O‘Donnell worked hard on his technical skills and it paid off with a terrific first place showing in his division of 15 skaters (to enter, his best 500â€"metre time was used to put him in a category to match his ability). In fact, he won all the distances in his division â€" 500m, 333m, 222m and 111m. Racing for the first time against much more experiâ€" enced skaters, 24â€"yearâ€"old Dan Pozzobon finished 11th out of 17 skaters and proved that with more practice and race experience he will be a contender in the 1500m, 1000m, 777m and 500m. event earlier this month, and for the first time some Oakville athletes competed. They didn‘t do half bad, either. Both skaters did four distances and eight races over the twoâ€"day period in Cambridge.
