The incumbent Ward 4 local councillor retained his seat Monday night after leading challenger Jim Stock by a wide margin all evening. In the end â€" buoyed by a final tally of 1,936 votes to 1,051 â€" Brown was pleased by what he believes is a clear message from his communiâ€" ty. "It feels pretty good. Every three years there is a performance review and you want to find out how you‘re doing," he said. "Obviously I still have to work hard. Obviously we‘re on the right track as a Council and as a town." Brown, who lost five pounds during the campaign and had two pairs of shoes reâ€"soled, said voters understood his own personal manâ€" date and style of doing business. "I always tried to be forthright with people. I think that helps," he said. "I‘m interested in solving Sun. Stock was gracious in defeat: "I thought Mark ran a very clean camâ€" paign and I congratulate him on his success. There will be another day." While Brown says there was no one burning issue to the campaign, Stock said the point he had been trying to make never really came across. The town, he maintains, is at a transition point where innovative thinking and proâ€"active planning in such areas as transit and business development must be taken to allow the town to mature properly. Tedd Smith back at local council after winning hot Ward 3 battle Oakville Beaver Staff By ROD JERRED Ward 3 councillor Tedd Smith is used to close election races. Three years ago, when Smith was first elected to council he won by just 189 votes over Paul Vetter. "If we don‘t we‘ll become a dorâ€" mitory town," said Stock. "It‘s not sleepy Oakville anymore." For his part, Brown maintains that while the Town is well run, its elected officials must continue to be creative in their ways of seeking solutions. He is particularly pleased with the composition of the new Council and the "new blood" voted in on Monday. "The new people are focused on problemâ€"solving and not ideoloâ€" gies," he said. This time around the margin of victory was greater â€" 3,169 votes for Smith and 2,330 votes for his opponent David Amato â€" but the evening was just as tense. Behrens retains her When Smith entered town hall shortly after the polls closed, Monday night, he was actually trailâ€" ing Amato , a relative newcomer to the community. But midway through the ballot counting, Smith pulled into a slim 1,332 to 1,253 lead and never looked back. "they always say the first term may be a fluke, but the second term, you‘ve got to work for it," said Smith, president of Case Tech Leather Inc. of Oakville. By DIANE HART Special to the Beaver While calling the campaign a "gentlemanly" race, Smith did take offence to Amato‘s call for proacâ€" tive leadership. "If you want to call me reactive instead of proactive, then that‘s the way it goes," said Smith. "There are numerous times when ratepayers call me and say, * This is the situaâ€" tion. Do something about it,‘ and I have reacted. It‘s hard to put out a fire when there isn‘t one." Despite his defeat at the hands 0 a veteran councillor now looking a record for most consecutive year in office, challenger Jim Richard has vowed to return for another ba tle. As for Amato, he was far from disappointed by the results. Ward 5 region seat Veteran Ward 5 regional counci lor, Liz Behrens, acclaimed in he last two elections, triumphed at th final tally by polling 2,211 votes Richards® 1,638 votes. "I lost by numbers tonight, n by principle," said Richards, as h entered the Town Hall to congratu late Behrens and the other winner He said the numbers bear out hi own feeling that there are a numb of people who are having "secon thoughts" about her representation., Richards â€" the president of t River Oaks Association Residents (ROAR) â€" advocated "I don‘t think this campaign has a thing to be ashamed of." A Clearview resident for the past year, Amato said it was "phenomeâ€" nal" for a young newcomer to win 42% of the vote. "It shows by the results that peoâ€" ple were ready for a change," said. "Watch out for next year." Amato said he definitely intend: to run next year, and feels confiden of winning after three more years 0 community involvement under hi belt." 467 SPEERS RD., OAKVILLE 845â€"9742 or 845â€"382.
