Tc en 2 e o s en io Oakville Trafaigar 59, Milton 40 Halton championship (Tues., Nov. 22, 4 p.m., Sheridan College): Oak Trafaigar vs Bishop Reding Bishop Ryan, he said, posted more points per game. "Even in our own league (Richardson Division) we weren‘t the top scoring team." JUNIOR Oakville Trafalgar is the only team in Tuesday‘s championship that didn‘t finish the season undefeated â€" and coach Kirsten Campbell couldn‘t have been any happier. The twoâ€"point loss came at the hands of Notre Dame. "We had a breakdown in team communication. We needed to deal with it. It was good that it happened then." Ironically, the team‘s toughest hurdle to the playoffs was their quarterâ€"final game â€" a 45â€"42 win over (you guessed it!) Notre Dame. In the semiâ€"finals, they had an easier time in disposing of Milton 59â€"40. Anchoring the team, she said, is Becky Richardson. "She‘s our leading player. She‘s incredible, offensively and defensively." After falling behind 11â€"0, Juzenas said he resisted calling a timeâ€"out, as some supporters had suggested after the game, in order not to feed any sense of panic. As it turned out, the players hit a few baskets and quickly loosened up. In the second half, he said the team‘s intensity, especially on defence, increased, limiting Milton to only a half a dozen points. Against Bishop Reding, he said they‘ll try and dictate their style of play which is "a controlled, patient game â€" we want it slow." "Milton pressed well. But she (Swinburne) was able to break the press and get us into our offence." St. Thomas Aquinas actually got off to a terriâ€" ble start, falling behind 11â€"0 and trailing by two at the half. The Raiders, he said, haven‘t blown many teams out, instead winning most of their games with margins in the single digits. "They (Bishop Reding) are noted for their defence and how aggressively they play. They apply a lot of pressure." The key behind St. Thomas Aquinas‘ transiâ€" tion game is point guard Rory Swinburne. "She sets everything up," said Juzenas. For her to do her job, however, "all five will have to touch the ball." Fortunately, he said Thursday‘s 47â€"34 semiâ€" final victory over Milton provided a good dry run. St. Thomas Aquinas faced Bishop Reding once this year, losing by "12 or 13 points" in an exhibition match, said Juzenas. "If we can get into our offence, I think we can stay with them." In the junior game, which begins at 4 p.m., Oakville Trafalgar High School (7â€"1 record) takes on undefeated Bishop Reding (9â€"0). "Hopefully, it will be a good game from that standpoint," said Aquinas coach Vic Juzenas. In the senior game, which gets under way at 5:30 p.m., Oakville‘s St. Thomas Aquinas takes on Milton‘s Bishop Reding in a battle of undeâ€" feated teams (STA was 9â€"0 to lead the Richardson Division, B.R. was 8â€"0 to lead the Volpe Division). Fittingly, the girls Halton high school basketâ€" ball championships, which tip off at Sheridan College Tuesday afternoon, will feature the best teams throughout the regular season. Saulez (84) and Mark Cabral (44) race for the ball against an Assumption player in the Halton junior final on Thursday. Assumption had "a better team that day," said Aquinas coach Rick Kalvaitis. In particular, he paid tribute to their "front seven" for keeping the pressure on Saulez, the quarterback, who was hurting from a recent soccer injury. Still Kalvaitis noted that "17 teams go for it (the Halton championship and we were down to the final two â€" you got to be happy."
